The plants of 'NCORNSP-025SCK' are taller than those of the reference varieties. The stem internode of 'NCORNSP-025SCK' is longer than that of 'NCORNSP-012EMLC' while it is shorter than that of 'Sweet Caroline Light Green'. The stem diameter for 'NCORNSP-025SCK' is medium to large while that of 'Sweet Caroline Light Green' is small to medium. The stem of 'NCORNSP-025SCK' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while it is absent or weak for the reference varieties. Origin & Breeding History: 'NCORNSP-025SCK' was bred and developed by Dr. G. Craig Yencho, Meri K. Reeber, Dr. Kenneth V. Pecota and Dominic A. Gillooly at the North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A. The variety originated from a cross between the proprietary breeding lines 'NC8555-004', as the female parent, and 'NC8524-003' as the male parent. The cross occurred in a winter green house crossing block between September 2014 and March, 2015. The resulting seed was sown in February 2015 and the seedlings transplanted to 15 cm pots. Vegetative cuttings were taken from each plant and propagated in April 2015. The resulting young plants were planted in field plots in June 2015. 'NCORNSP-024SCRI' was selected on August 31, 2015 at the Horticultural Crops Research Station in Clinton, North Carolina based on growth habit, vigour, branch architecture, leaf size, shape and colour.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'NCORNSP-025SCK' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2019 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 15, 2019. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 3, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
