Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'NCORNSP-027SCMG' originated from a conventional cross conducted by the breeders, Dr. G. Craig Yencho and Dr. Kenneth V. Pecota, employees of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A. between October 2014 and April 2015. The cross was conducted at the Horticultural Crops Research Station in Clinton, North Carolina, U.S.A. between two proprietary lines, the female parent designated 'NC8720-027ORN' and the male parent designated 'NC8568-001ORN'. The resultant seed was bulked and sown in December 2015 and surviving seedlings were transplanted into 15 cm pots. Vegetative cuttings were taken from each plant and propagated in April 2016. The resulting young plants were planted in a field as part of a two plant unreplicated plot in June 2016. 'NCORNSP-027SCMG' was selected as a single plant on September 25, 2016, based on its plant growth habit and vigour, plant architecture, branching, leaf colour and leaf shape.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'NCORNSP-027SCMG' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2021 at BioFlora, Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 16, 2021. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on June 2, 2021. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
