Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'OHB003790' (Dreamtime Jumbo Yellow)

Summary: 'Ohdrejumwhi' is a strawflower variety which has a similar plant growth habit to 'OHB003790'. The leaf blade of 'Ohdrejumwhi' is dark green, compared with 'OHB003790' which has a medium green leaf. The main difference between the two varieties is flower colour. 'Ohdrejumwhi' has white flowers, whereas 'OHB003790' has yellow flowers. The candidate variety also has more bracts in the flower head than the reference variety. The two varieties differ in shape of the flower head in the lateral view. 'Ohdrejumwhi' has a concave flower head (becoming flat with age), while that of 'OHB003790' is flat, changing to convex as the flower ages.

Description:

PLANT: erect growth habit, dense

STEM: dense pubescence with long, adpressed hairs

LEAF BLADE: broadest part in the middle, apex narrow acute, dark green upper side, dense pubescence on upper and lower sides (very short hairs)

FLOWER BUD: pointed apex, whitish colour
FLOWER HEAD: level or just above foliage, lower part convex in lateral view, upper part concave in lateral view (flattening with age), many bracts, one colour
BRACTS: one colour, whitish, no striations, upper bracts strongly incurved, lower bracts weakly incurved
PAPPUS: white

Origin & Breeding History: 'Ohdrejumwhi' originated in a controlled breeding program during 2002 at Winmalee, New South Wales, Australia. The female parent was the proprietary selection designated 02-7, characterized by its white flower colour, dark green leaf colour, and medium compact growth habit. The male parent was the variety 'OHB003790' (Dreamtime Jumbo Yellow), characterized by its yellow flower colour, mid to dark green leaf colour, and compact growth habit. The intial selection was made on February 11, 2003. Asexual propagation since that time has been through the use of vegetative cuttings.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'Ohdrejumwhi' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2006 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 11 cm pots on May 10, 2006. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on July 24, 2006. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart.
