Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Bondrelaipi' (Dreamtime Jumbo Light Pink)

Summary: The flower buds of 'Bondre 1051' are dark purple red whereas those of 'Bondrelaipi' are white to light yellow brown with brown purple at the tip. The predominant position of the flower heads of 'Bondre 1051' is high above the foliage whereas those of 'Bondrelaipi' is level with or just above the foliage. The colour of the bracts of 'Bondre 1051' are brown purple to dark purple red whereas those of 'Bondrelaipi' are light blue pink to blue pink.

Description:

PLANT: erect growth habit, medium to dense
STEM: moderate density of pubescence

LEAF BLADE: broadest part in middle, acute apex, no variegation, medium green on upper side, moderate density of pubescence on upper side, very sparse pubescence on lower side, very weak undulation of margin

PEDUNCLE: branched
BUD: pointed to rounded apex, dark purple red (RHS 187B-C) with brown purple (RHS 185C) towards apex
FLOWER HEAD: predominantly positioned high above foliage, lower part concave in lateral view, upper part concave to flat in lateral view
INVOLUCRE: one colour
BRACT: multi-coloured, striations present, medium degree of incurving
UPPER BRACT (INNER SIDE): lower third white (RHS 155D), middle third purple to purple red (RHS 60C-D), upper third dark purple red (RHS 60B)

Origin & Breeding History: 'Bondre 1051' originated from a controlled pollination conducted in August 2009, in New South Wales, Australia between the female parent, proprietary seedling '09-20' and the male parent, proprietary seedling '09-72'. The initial selection of 'Bondre 1051' was made in March 2010. Selection criteria included flower size, strong rose coloured bracts, flower number, and overal appearance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Bondre 1051' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2015 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 11.5 cm pots on May 11, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 17, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
