Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Driscoll Camarillo' and 'Ps 2880'

Summary: The plants of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' have strong vigour whereas the plants of 'Driscoll Camarillo' have medium vigour. The plants of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' begin flowering mid-season whereas those of 'Driscoll Camarillo' begin flowering early. The position of the inflorescence of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is the same level as the foliage whereas that of 'Driscoll Camarillo' is above the foliage. The plants for 'DrisStrawFortyFour' have a medium number of stolons whereas those for both 'Driscoll Camarillo' and 'Ps 2880' have few stolons. The stolons for 'DrisStrawFortyFour' have a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas those for 'Ps 2880' have a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The terminal leaflet of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is much longer than it is wide whereas the terminal leaflet of 'Driscoll Camarillo' is equally as long as it is wide and that of 'Ps 2880' is moderately longer than wide. The base of the terminal leaflet of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is acute whereas that of 'Driscoll Camarillo' is rounded and that of 'Ps 2880' is obtuse. The flower of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' has a large diameter whereas that of both reference varieties has a medium diameter. The calyx for 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is larger than the corolla whereas the calyx for 'Driscoll Camarillo' is the same size as the corolla. The fruit of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is very large whereas it is medium sized for 'Driscoll Camarillo'. The fruit of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is conical whereas that of 'Driscoll Camarillo' is wedged and that of 'Ps 2880' is cordate. The achenes for 'DrisStrawFortyFour' are positioned below the fruit surface whereas those for 'Driscoll Camarillo' are positioned above the fruit surface. The calyx of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is slightly larger than the diameter of the fruit whereas that of 'Driscoll Camarillo' is the same size as the fruit. The calyx for 'DrisStrawFortyFour' adheres strongly to the fruit whereas that for 'Driscoll Camarillo' has a medium adherence to the fruit.

INFLORESCENCE: positioned at same level as foliage, many flowers
PEDICEL: horizontal attitude of hairs
FLOWER: calyx larger than corolla, large diameter, overlapping petal arrangement, stamen present
PETAL: length equal to width, white inner side

CALYX: attachment level with fruit, diameter slightly larger than fruit, outward attitude of sepals, strong adherence to fruit
FRUIT: begins ripening mid-season, moderately longer than wide, very large, conical, none or very slight difference in shape between terminal fruit and other fruit, firm

Origin & Breeding History: 'DrisStrawFortyFour' originated from a cross conducted in January 2008 in Monterey County, California, USA. The cross was made between the proprietary female parent '112N245' and an open pollinated bulk as the male parent. A single plant was selected for asexual propagation by tissue culture and vegetative cuttings in October 2009 in Shasta County, California, USA based on maturity time, disease resistance and fruit colour. Further propagation and testing was conducted in Monterey County from 2009 to 2014.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'DrisStrawFortyFour' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2014/3495, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, in Angers, France. The trials were conducted at the Escaroupim Studies Center - Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, in Portugal from 2014 to 2016.
