Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Driscoll Del Rey' and 'Selva'

Summary: The plants of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' have an upright growth habit whereas those of both reference varieties have a spreading growth habit. The foliage of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is of medium density whereas that of 'Driscoll Del Rey' is sparse. The plants of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' have few stolons whereas those of 'Driscoll Del Rey' have none or very few stolons. The leaf of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' has absent or very weak blistering whereas the leaf of both reference varieties has strong blistering. In cross-section, the terminal leaflet of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is concave whereas that of 'Selva' is straight. The petiole of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is short whereas that of 'Driscoll Del Rey' is of medium length. The inflorescence of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' has a medium number of flowers whereas that of 'Driscoll Del Rey' has many flowers. The calyx of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is larger than the corolla whereas the calyx of 'Selva' is the same size as the corolla. The fruit of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is much longer than it is wide whereas the fruit of 'Driscoll Del Rey' is equally as long as it is wide and the fruit of 'Selva' is moderately shorter than wide. The fruit of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is of medium size whereas that of 'Driscoll Del Rey' is large. The terminal fruit of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' has none or a very slight difference in shape from the other fruit whereas that of 'Selva' has a large difference in shape from the other fruit. The fruit surface of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is medium red whereas that of 'Driscoll Del Rey' is dark red. The fruit surface of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is strongly uneven whereas that of 'Selva' is slightly uneven. The band without achenes for 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is narrow whereas that for 'Driscoll Del Rey' is absent or very narrow. The achenes of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' are positioned at the same level as the fruit surface whereas those of 'Selva' are above the fruit surface. The calyx attachment for 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is level with the fruit whereas that for 'Driscoll Del Rey' is raised. The sepals of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' have an outwards attitude whereas those of 'Driscoll Del Rey' have a downwards attitude. The calyx of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is slightly smaller than the diameter of the fruit whereas the calyx of 'Driscoll Del Rey' is much larger than the diameter of the fruit.

PEDICEL: horizontal attitude of hairs
FLOWER: calyx larger than corolla, medium diameter, overlapping petal arrangement, stamen present
PETAL: length equal to width, white inner side

CALYX: attachment level with fruit, diameter slightly smaller than fruit, outward attitude of sepals, medium strength adherence to fruit

Origin & Breeding History: 'DrisStrawThirtySix' originated from a cross conducted in January 2008 in Ventura County, California, USA. The cross was made between the proprietary female parent '101P292' and the proprietary male parent '73PI 76'. A single plant was selected for asexual propagation by tissue culture and vegetative cuttings in 2009 in Shasta County, California, USA based on plant vigour, time of maturity, fruit size and fruit shape. Further propagation and testing was conducted in Ventura County from 2010 to 2012.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2014/0314, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, in Angers, France. The trials were conducted at the Escaroupim Studies Center - Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, in Portugal from 2015 to 2016.
