Variety Description

Summary: 'Avarosa' has a stolon with weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas 'Cirano has a stolon with a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. 'Avarosa' has a stipule that has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas 'Amandine' and 'EVIE 2' has a stipule with very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The petiole of 'Avarosa' is longer than the petiole of 'Albion' and 'Malling Opal'. The fruit of 'Avarosa' has flesh that is medium red whereas the fruit of 'Buddy' has flesh that is light pink and the fruit of 'Diamante' and 'Verity' has flesh that is light red.

Description:

PLANT: day neutral bearing type, upright growth habit, medium to dense foliage, medium to strong vigour

STOLONS: medium number, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence

PETIOLE: long, horizontal attitude of hairs
STIPULE: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: large, medium green on upper side, medium blistering, medium glossiness on upper side, no variegation
TERMINAL LEAFLET: moderately longer than wide, obtuse base, serrate to crenate margin, straight in cross-section

FLOWERING: begins early
INFLORESCENCE: positioned above foliage, few flowers
PEDICEL: upwards attitude of hairs
FLOWER: calyx larger than corolla, medium diameter, overlapping petal arrangement, stamens present
PETAL: length equal to width, white on inner side

CALYX: attachment is level with surface of fruit, diameter same size as fruit, medium adherence to fruit, outwards attitude of sepals
FRUIT: begins ripening very early to early, moderately longer than wide, large to very large, conical shape, moderate difference in shape between terminal fruit and other fruit, , narrow width of band without achenes

Origin & Breeding History: 'Avarosa' originated from a controlled cross conducted in 2005 between two proprietary parents at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. One seedling, designated as 'Avarosa', was selected in 2009 from the resulting progeny based on berry size, appearance, flavour, yield, and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Avarosa' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2012/1249, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hannover, Germany from 2013 to 2014.
