Summary: The terminal leaflet of 'Malling Vitality' has a length equal to the width whereas that of 'R223' is moderately longer than it is wide. The plants of 'Malling Vitality' flower early whereas those of 'R223' flower mid-season to late. The fruit of 'Malling Vitality' is moderately longer than it is wide whereas that of 'R223' has a length equal to the width. The fruit surface of 'Malling Vitality' is orange red whereas that of 'R223' is dark red.
Description:
PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, medium density foliage, strong vigour, not remontant bearing type
STOLON: many, weak to medium intensity anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence
LEAF: large, dark green upper side, medium degree of blistering, strong glossiness, no variegation
TERMINAL LEAFLET: length equal to width, rounded base, serrate to crenate margin, concave in cross-section
STIPULE: medium intensity anthocyanin colouration
PETIOLE: long, horizontal attitude of hairs
FLOWERING: begins early
INFLORESCENCE: positioned beneath foliage, medium to many flowers
PEDICEL: upwards attitude of hairs
FLOWER: large diameter, overlapping petal arrangement, calyx same size as corolla, stamen present
PETAL: length equal to width, white upper side
CALYX: level attachment with fruit, outwards attitude of sepals, diameter slightly larger than fruit, strong adherence to fruit
FRUIT: length moderately longer than width, large to very large, conical shape, none or very slight difference in shape between terminal fruit and other fruit, firm, large cavity, begins ripening early
FRUIT SURFACE: orange red, even or very slightly uneven colour, strong glossiness, even or very slightly uneven, narrow band without achenes, achenes positioned below surface

Origin & Breeding History: 'Malling Vitality' originated from a controlled cross conducted at East Malling Research, in Kent, United Kingdom in 2013. The new variety 'Malling Vitality' was selected in 2014 based on fruit size, fruit shape and disease resistance.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Malling Vitality' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2020/1299, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Centralny Orodek Badania Odmian Rolin Uprawnych (COBORU) Research Center for Cultivar Testing in Maslowice, Poland from 2020 to 2022.
