Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Vivaldi', 'Osiris', 'Aprica', 'Ritmo' and 'Marionnet 86', 'Nabila'

Summary: The leaves of ‘Falco' have strong glossiness whereas those of ‘Vivaldi', ‘Marionnet 86' and ‘Nabila' have medium glossiness. The stipule of ‘Falco' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of ‘Aprica' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The time of ripening of the fruit of ‘Falco' is early whereas that of ‘Ritmo' is mid-season. The fruit of ‘Falco' is firm whereas that of ‘Osiris' is a medium firmness.

Description:

PLANT: not remontant bearing type, upright growth habit, medium to dense foliage, medium to strong vigour
STOLONS: medium to many, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium density of pubescence

LEAF: medium to large, medium green upper side, medium degree of blistering, strong glossiness, no variegation
TERMINAL LEAFLET: moderately longer than wide, obtuse base, serrate margin, concave in cross-section
STIPULE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
PETIOLE: medium to long, horizontal attitude of hairs

FLOWERING: begins mid-season
INFLORESCENCE: positioned at same level as foliage, few flowers
PEDICEL: upwards attitude of hairs
FLOWER: medium to large diameter, calyx the same size as the corolla, overlapping petal arrangement, stamen present
PETAL: length equal to width, white inner side

CALYX: position of attachment is level with fruit surface, slightly larger than fruit diameter, outwards attitude of sepals, medium adherence to fruit
FRUIT: ripening begins early, length equal to width, large, conical shape, slight to moderate difference in shape between terminal fruit and other fruit, firm, absent or small cavity
FRUIT SURFACE: medium red, slightly uneven colour distribution, strong glossiness, slightly uneven, very narrow to narrow band without achenes, achenes level with surface
FRUIT FLESH: medium red, medium red core

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Falco' originated from a cross between two proprietary breeding selections conducted in Ens, the Netherlands in April of 2011. The new variety ‘Falco' was selected in May of 2012 based on time of maturity, yield, fruit size, fruit firmness, fruit flavour and fruit colour.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘Falco' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20183414, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt Prüfstelle, Wurzen, Germany from 2021 to 2022.
