Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Rubis des Jardins', ‘Capriss' and ‘Parlando'

Summary: The stolon of ‘Marys Peak' has dense pubescence while that of 'Rubis des Jardins' has sparse pubescence. The upper side of the leaf of ‘Marys Peak' is dark green while that of 'Rubis des Jardins' is medium green. The terminal leaflet of ‘Marys Peak' has an obtuse shaped base while that of ‘Parlando' has an acute shaped base. The fruit surface of ‘Marys Peak' has a medium to broad band without achenes while that of ‘Capriss' has a narrow to medium width band without achenes and that of ‘Parlando' has a narrow band without achenes. Excluding the core, the fruit flesh of ‘Marys Peak' is dark red while that of ‘Capriss' is medium red.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, medium to dense foliage, strong vigour, medium to many stolons, non-remontant bearing type

STOLON: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration, dense pubescence

PETIOLE: long, horizontal attitude of hairs
STIPULE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: large to very large, dark green upper side, strong blistering, medium degree of glossiness, no variegation
TERMINAL LEAFLET: moderately longer than wide, obtuse base, serrate margin, concave in cross-section

FLOWERING: begins mid to late season
PEDICEL: slightly outward attitude of hairs
INFLORESCENCE: same level as foliage, few flowers
FLOWER: large to very large diameter, free arrangement of petals, calyx larger than corolla, stamen present
PETAL: moderately longer than wide, white upper side

CALYX: raised attachment, upwards attitude of sepals, diameter same as fruit, weak adherence to fruit
FRUIT: moderately longer than wide, large, conical shape, slight difference in shape of terminal fruit and other fruit, soft to medium firmness, medium sized cavity, begins ripening early to mid-season
FRUIT SURFACE: dark red, slightly uneven colour, strong glossiness, slightly uneven, medium to broad band without achenes, achenes level with surface
FRUIT FLESH: dark red, medium red core

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Marys Peak' originated from a cross between the varieties ‘Pinnacle', as the female parent, and ‘ORUS 1723-3', as the male parent, conducted in Corvallis, Oregon, U.S.A in June 2002. The new variety ‘Marys Peak' was selected in 2002 based on fruit flavor, size, firmness, colour, yield and botrytis fruit rot incidence.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘Marys Peak' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20220132, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hanover, Germany in 2023 and 2024.
