Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Driscoll El Dorado', 'DrisStrawThirtySix' and ‘dc924.066'

Summary: The plants of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' have an upright growth habit while the plants of ‘DrisStrawThirtySix' have a spreading growth habit. The stolon of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' has a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the stolon of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' has an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and that of ‘dc924.066' has a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The leaf of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' has strong blistering while the leaf of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' has absent or very weak blistering. The petiole of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' is of medium length while the petiole of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' is short. The stipule of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' has a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of the reference varieties have an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The hairs on the pedicel of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' have an upwards attitude while those on the pedicel of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' have a horizontal attitude. The fruit of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' has an even or very slightly uneven surface while the fruit of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' has a strongly uneven surface. The calyx of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' has a strong adherence to the fruit while the calyx of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' has a medium adherence to the fruit. The fruit of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' is soft while the fruit of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' is of medium firmness and the fruit of 'DrisStrawThirtySix' and ‘dc924.066' are firm. Excluding the core, the fruit flesh of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' is light red while the fruit flesh of ‘Driscoll El Dorado' is light pink.

Description:

PLANT: upright growth habit, medium to dense foliage, medium vigour, few to medium number of stolons, fully remontant bearing type

STOLON: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, sparse pubescence

PETIOLE: medium length, slightly outwards attitude of hairs
STIPULE: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: medium size, dark green upper side, strong blistering, medium degree of glossiness, no variegation
TERMINAL LEAFLET: equal in length and width, obtuse base, serrate to crenate margin, concave in cross-section

FLOWERING: begins mid-season
PEDICEL: upwards attitude of hairs
INFLORESCENCE: positioned above foliage, few flowers
FLOWER: large to very large diameter, touching arrangement of petals, calyx same size to larger than corolla, stamen present
PETAL: moderately shorter than wide, white upper side

CALYX: attachment level with fruit, outwards attitude of sepals, diameter same as fruit, strong adherence to fruit
FRUIT: moderately longer than wide, medium size, conical shape, none or very slight difference in shape of terminal fruit and other fruit, soft, absent or small cavity, begins ripening mid-season

Origin & Breeding History: ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' (experimental designation dc911.017) originated from a cross between two proprietary varieties, ‘920AA240' as the female parent, and ‘914U 19' as the male parent, conducted in Jocotepec, Jalisco, Mexico, in August 2013. The new variety was selected in Tangancicuaro, Michoacan, Mexico in December 2014 based on maturity and yield at high elevations, fruit size, fruit flavor, shelf-life, plant architecture and tolerance to mites.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘DrisStrawEightyTwo' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2020/2572, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted at the Portuguese General Directorate for Food and Veterinary Affairs, Plant Health Services Directorate in Lisbon, Portugal in 2021 and 2022.
