Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: ‘Dar Select', ‘Rosie', ‘Malling Centenary', ‘Opera' and ‘Nabila'

Summary: The stipule of ‘Twist' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the stipule of ‘Dar Select' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and that of ‘Rosie' has a very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The inflorescence of ‘Twist' has few flowers while the inflorescence of ‘Opera' has a medium number of flowers. The terminal fruit of ‘Twist' have a slight to moderate difference in shape from other fruit while the terminal fruit of ‘Malling Centenary' have none or a very slight difference in shape from other fruit. The fruit of ‘Twist' is medium to firm while the fruit of ‘Nabila' is firm to very firm.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, medium density of foliage, medium vigour, few stolons, non remontant type bearing

STOLON: medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium density of pubescence

PETIOLE: medium length, horizontal attitude of hairs
STIPULE: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
LEAF: medium to large, dark green upper side, medium degree of blistering, medium glossiness, no variegation
TERMINAL LEAFLET: moderately longer than wide, obtuse base, serrate margin, concave in cross-section

FLOWERING: begins early in season
PEDICEL: slightly outwards attitude of hairs
INFLORESCENCE: positioned above foliage, few flowers
FLOWER: large diameter, overlapping arrangement of petals, calyx same size as corolla, stamen present
PETAL: equal length and width, white upper side

CALYX: attachment level with fruit, outwards attitude of sepals, diameter slightly larger than fruit, weak adherence to fruit
FRUIT: moderatley longer than wide, medium to large, conical shape, slight to moderate difference in shape of terminal fruit and other fruit, medium to firm, medium sized cavity, begins ripening early in the season
FRUIT SURFACE: medium red, slightly uneven colour, strong glossiness, slightly uneven, narrow band without achenes, achenes level with surface
FRUIT FLESH: medium red, medium red core

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Twist' (experimental designation FE 2015) originated from a cross between two unnamed seedlings, E2008-001 as the female parent, and E2010-411 as the male parent, conducted in Eck en Weil, the Netherlands in the spring/summer of 2013. The new variety ‘Twist' was selected in 2015 based on fruit shape, fruit appearance, fruit adherence and yield.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘Twist' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20201263, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Hanover, Germany in 2021 and 2022.
