Summary: 'Blizzard' produces a narrower plant, with more of a drooping growth habit than 'Bridal Showers'. The shoot length of 'Blizzard' is longer than 'Bridal Showers'. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration in the stem is less in 'Blizzard' than in 'Bridal Showers'. 'Blizzard' has slightly larger leaves with more teeth along the margin than 'Bridal Showers'. The corolla tube of 'Blizzard' is slightly longer than in 'Bridal Showers'.
Description:
'Blizzard' is a vegetatively propagated, annual sutera variety. Plant growth habit is semi drooping to drooping, with a medium to dense degree of branching. There is medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration present in the stem.
The simple ovate shaped leaves have a crenate to serrate type margin that has medium to many number of teeth. The upper side of the leaf blade is green in colour, with sparse to medium pubescence.
The solitary flowers are funnel form in shape, axillary , and the corolla tube have a straight attitude. 'Blizzard' flowers very early in the season. The 5 lobes of the corolla tube are completely fused at the base. The outer side of the corolla tube has medium to strong pubescence which is short in length. The corolla lobing is strong with absent to very weak undulation of the margin. The colour of the upper side of the corolla lobes is white while the inner side of the corolla tube is yellow.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Blizzard' is the product of a planned breeding program conducted by the breeder in Emerald, Australia in 1995. It was a naturally occurring mutation of the Sutera cordata variety 'Snowflake'.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Blizzard' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2002 at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario. The trials consisted of 15 plants per variety grown in 10cm pots. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements. Colour measurements were made using an RHS Colour Chart 2001.
