Summary: 'KLESU03188' is a Sutera variety which has a larger flower diameter than the reference variety 'Lavender Showers'. The corolla tube of 'KLESU03188' is longer than the tube of 'Lavender Showers'. 'KLESU03188' has a yellow inner side of the corolla tube, whereas the inner side of the tube in 'Lavender Showers' is yellow-orange.

Description:

'KLESU03188' is a Sutera variety which has a horizontal to semi-trailing growth habit and medium to dense branching. The stems have strong anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are simple and rounded in shape. The leaf margins are crenate with few teeth. 'KLESU03188' has medium green leaves with medium pubescence on the upper surface.

The inflorescences of 'KLESU03188' are located in both terminal and axillary positions on the stems and are a racemose type of cluster. The corolla tubes are straight and funnel shaped with dense, medium length pubescence on the outer surface. The corolla lobes are free and have weak undulation of the margin. The upper side of the corolla is light blue violet and the inner side of the corolla tube is yellow.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLESU03188' originated from a cross between Sutera seedlings 'TW001' and 'BW001'. This cross was conducted in 2000 by the breeder, Nils Klemm, in Stuttgart, Germany. 'KLESU03188' was selected based on its flower colour, flower size and early flowering time. It was evaluated in greenhouse and outdoor trials in Stuttgart, Germany in 2002. Greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate rooting performance, speed and uniformity of growth, plant growth habit and earliness of flowering. Outdoor trials were conducted to evaluate the length of the flowering period and resistance to disease and weather conditions.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for 'KLESU03188' were conducted in a polyhouse during the spring and summer of 2005 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plants of each variety. The plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm pots on April 28th, 2005. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart.
