Variety used for comparison: 'Granadero'

Summary: The plants of 'Azovian' are taller than those of 'Granadero'. The leaflets of 'Azovian' are larger than those of 'Granadero'. At maturity, the fruit of 'Azovian' are larger than those of 'Granadero'. The fruit of 'Azovian' matures mid to late season while the fruit of 'Granadero' matures late season.

Description:

SEEDLING: anthocyanin colouration of hypocotyl present

PLANT: indeterminate growth type, tall to very tall, flowers mid season, mid to late fruit maturity

STEM: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium to long internode

LEAF: semi-drooping to drooping attitude, long to very long, medium to broad, bipinnate blade type
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): medium to dark green, weak glossiness, weak to medium blistering
LEAFLET: medium sized, semi-erect to horizontal attitude of petiole in relation to main axis of leaf

INFLORESCENCE: mainly uniparous type
PEDUNCLE: abscission layer present, medium to long
FLOWER: yellow, pubescence of style present

IMMATURE FRUIT: no green shoulder, light to medium green skin (excluding shoulder), no green stripes
MATURE FRUIT: medium sized, large length to diameter ratio, obovate shape in longitudinal section, weak ribbing at peduncle end, weak depression at peduncle end, small to medium sized peduncle scar, very small to small blossom scar, flat to pointed at blossom end, medium diameter of core (in cross-section) in relation to total diameter when viewed from above, medium thick pericarp, two and three locules, red skin, medium glossiness of skin, red flesh, firm to very firm

Origin & Breeding History: 'Azovian' (breeder's reference NUN 03998 TOF) originated from a controlled cross conducted between two proprietary lines in 2016 in Italy. 'Azovian' was selected in 2016 for its red fruit colour, firm fruit, taste and disease resistance to yellow leaf curl and spotted wilt virus and nematodes and first produced in 2017.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Azovian' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number TMT3524, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands in 2020.
