Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Dantoromoon' (Rose Moon)

Summary: 'Dancatpink' has a smaller leaf with a shorter petiole than 'Dantoromoon'. 'Dancatpink' has shallower margin incisions than 'Dantoromoon'. 'Dancatpink' has darker leaf colour than 'Dantoromoon'. 'Dancatpink' differs slightly in the colour of the inner side of the lateral and lower petals than 'Dantoromoon'.

Description:

'Dancatpink' has a semi-erect growth habit. The stem has absent to very sparse pubescence and is light green in colour with weak anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade is broad ovate in shape with a narrow to broad acute shaped apex. The leaf base is truncate in shape. The leaf blade has dentate to serrate incisions which are shallow in depth. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green in colour and has very sparse pubescence. The petiole has weak anthocyanin colouration on the upper side.

'Dancatpink' has trumpet shaped flowers. The calyx has weak anthocyanin present and the calyx wings are medium in size. The corolla lobes have strong undulation of the margin. The inner side of the upper petal is violet in colour with no secondary colour. The inner side of the lateral and lower petals is violet in colour with light blue violet secondary colour. The secondary colour is located at the transition to the corolla tube. There is a medium to large yellow stripe on the lower petal. The inner side of the corolla tube has moderately conspicuous venation.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Dancatpink' originated from a mutation on the parent variety 'Rose Moon' through exposure to radiation. The new variety was selected in May 2003, based on flower characteristics, growth habit and field performance traits. The variety was first vegetatively propagated in May 2003 in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.

Tests & Trials: 'Dancatpink' was tested in a polyhouse during the summer of 2005, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 11 cm pots on April 28, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001. Measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
