Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sunrekoroho' (Summer Wave Bouquet Deep Rose)

Summary: The plants of ‘17TOR1-7-04' are taller and wider than those of ‘Sunrekoroho'. In front view, the flowers of ‘17TOR1-7-04' are longer and wider than those of ‘Sunrekoroho'. The corolla tubes of ‘17TOR1-7-04' are longer than those of ‘Sunrekoroho'. The basal part of the upper corolla lobe of ‘17TOR1-7-04' is light violet whereas that of ‘Sunrekoroho' is white. The distal part of the upper corolla lobe of ‘17TOR1-7-04' is dark purple whereas that of ‘Sunrekoroho' is medium violet.

PLANT: semi-upright to horizontal growth habit

LEAF BLADE: short petiole, dentate to crenate margin incisions, shallow margin incisions

INFLORESCENCE: axillary flower present
CALYX: five lobes
COROLLA: medium density of margin incisions
UPPER COROLLA LOBE: medium degree of undulation, light violet (RHS 76B) basal part, light violet (RHS 76A) distal part
LATERAL COROLLA LOBE: dark purple (RHS 70A) central part, light violet (RHS N75C) marginal part
LOWER COROLLA LOBE: light violet (RHS 76A) distal part, medium conspicuousness of blotch
COROLLA TUBE: light violet (RHS 76A) outer side, dark yellow (RHS 15A) inner side of basal parts, strong vertical lines on inner side

Origin & Breeding History: '17TOR1-7-04' originated from a controlled cross between the female parent variety 'Catalina Blue River' and the male parent variety ‘Kauai Lemon Drop' conducted in Toyota, Aichi, Japan in July of 2017. ‘17TOR1-7-04' was selected in June of 2018 based on plant vigour, flower size, flowering frequency, heat tolerance, and disease tolerance. Asexual reproduction by terminal cuttings was initiated in June of 2018.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for '17TOR1-7-04' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2024 at Bioflora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 11.4 cm diameter pots on April 12, 2024. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, on May 18, 2024. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
