Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Pronghorn' and 'Sandro'
Summary: At booting, the intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'Thauvex' is medium to strong whereas it is absent or very weak for 'Sandro'. The degree of glaucosity on the flag leaf sheath of 'Thauvex' is medium whereas it is strong to very strong for the reference varieties. During anthesis, the flag leaf of 'Thauvex' is longer than that of 'Pronghorn'. The plants of 'Thauvex' are taller than the plants of 'Sandro'. The external surface of the lower glume of 'Thauvex' is pubescent whereas it is glabrous for the reference varieties. The culm neck of 'Thauvex' is moderately to strongly curved whereas it is slightly to moderately curved for 'Sandro'. The colouration reaction to phenol of the kernel is medium for 'Thauvex' whereas it is very dark for 'Pronghorn' and dark to very dark for 'Sandro'.
Description:
PLANT: hexaploid, spring type, semi-prostrate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves at booting, heads mid-season
COLEOPTILE: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration
FLAG LEAF: medium glaucosity of sheath, medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles
CULM: moderately to strongly curved neck, dense pubescence
STRAW (STEM): thin to medium pith in cross-section
SPIKE: white at maturity, strong glaucosity, compact, narrow in profile, fully awned
AWNS: medium length above tip of spike, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration
LOWER GLUME: hairs present on external surface, first beak of medium length, absent or very small second beak
ANTHER: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
KERNEL: white, large, long, medium width, elliptical shape, medium phenol colouration
Origin & Breeding History: 'Thauvex' (experimental designations 'C1M13002' and CFT1006) is the result of an initial cross between proprietary selections conducted in 2001 in Schwäebisch Hall, Germany. In accordance with the pedigree method, plants were selected from the F2 generation to the F3 generation based on maturity. The F4 to F6 generations were selected based on maturity, lodging resistance, yield and test weight. The first yield evaluations were conducted during the F7 generation in Schwäebisch Hall, Germany. Seed multiplication began in the F7 generation. Breeder seed was obtained in 2007 from a line selected from the F7 generation. 'C1M13002' was tested for the first time in 2008 by La Coop fédérée in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, for yield, test weight, lodging resistance, early maturity and disease resistance. 'C1M13002' was entered in the Réseau Grandes Cultures du Québec's registration trials from 2010 to 2013.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Thauvex' were conducted during the 2016 and 2018 growing seasons at La Coop fédérée crop production research farm in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. There were three replicates per variety in 2016 and four replicates per variety in 2018, each arranged in a randomized complete block design and covering a plot size of 7.5 square metres. Each plot consisted of four rows, 5 metres long with a row spacing of 38 cm. The seeding density was such that it resulted in a total of over 2740 plants per variety. The measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 21 measurements in 2016 and 30 measurements in 2018. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on least significant difference (LSD) values.
