Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Tyndal', 'Brevis' and 'AC Ultima'
Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'AAC Delight' is medium whereas it is absent or very weak for 'Brevis' and 'AC Ultima'. The awns of 'AAC Delight' are at the tip only and are very short whereas those of 'Brevis' and 'AC Ultima' are fully awned and are of medium length. 'AAC Delight' has a longer spike than those of the reference varieties. The lower glume beak on 'AAC Delight' is very short whereas it is long for 'AC Ultima'. There is no hairiness on the external surface of the lower glume of 'AAC Delight' whereas it is present for 'Tyndal'.
Description:
PLANT: hexaploid, spring type, erect growth habit at tillering, absent or very low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves at booting, heads mid-season
COLEOPTILE: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration
FLAG LEAF: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration on auricles, very strong glaucosity of sheath
NECK OF CULM: straight, medium density of pubescence
STRAW (STEM): thin pith in cross section
SPIKE: very strong glaucosity, white at maturity, medium density, narrow in profile
AWNS: absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration, at tip only, very short
LOWER GLUME: very short first beak, absent or very small second beak, hairiness on external surface absent
KERNEL: amber, medium size, long, narrow, elliptical shape, no or very light colouration with phenol
AGRONOMIC TRAITS: good resistance to shattering, medium pre-harvest sprouting tendency
DISEASE REACTION: moderately resistant to ergot (Claviceps purpurea)
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Delight' arose from the cross '03P110 / 'Tyndal' conducted in 2004 at the Field Crop Development Centre, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, Lethbridge, Alberta. The F1 seed was shared with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada as part of the Canadian Triticale Biorefinery Initiative - Agricultural Bioproducts Innovation Program project. The F1 seeds were grown in the growth chamber and doubled haploids were produced using Isolated Microspore Culture method. After initial seed increase in the greenhouse in 2007, 108 double haploid lines were evaluated in preliminary yield trials in 2008. One line, D044, was selected for its agronomic performance, resistance to ergot, reduced awns and test weight. This line was advanced to the Triticale 'A' test in 2009 where it was tested as TA213 and to the 'B' test in 2010 where it was tested as TB-16. From 2011 to 2013, it was tested in the Western Spring Triticale Co-operative Test as T225 and was recommended for registration in February 2014.
Tests & Trials: Trials for 'AAC Delight' were conducted during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons at the Agriculure and Agri-Food Canada, Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, Lethbridge, Alberta. Each plot was replicated 3 times and seeded at a rate of 700 seeds/plot. Plots consisted of 4 rows, planted 3.0 metres in length with a row spacing of 23 cm. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 20 measurements per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
