Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Sunmaref TP-P'

Summary: 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' has a more prostrate growth habit than 'Sunmaref TP-P'. The pubescence on the stem, and the upper and lower surface of the leaf is greater in 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' than in 'Sunmaref TP-P'. 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' has a grey-green leaf colour while 'Sunmaref TP-P' has a green leaf colour. The flower colour in 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' is a blue pink while in 'Sunmaref TP-P' it is more a violet.

Description:

'Sunmaref TP-SAP' is an annual plant with a prostrate growth habit. The stems have medium to dense pubescence and are light to medium green in colour with absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are ovate in shape with an obtuse shaped base, deeply cut leaf margins and strongly lobed. The leaves are medium grey green in colour with medium pubescence on the upper surface and weak to medium pubescence on the lower surface. There is a leaf petiole present.

'Sunmaref TP-SAP' flowers a long time. The inflorescences produced by 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' are medium density corymbs which are both axillary and terminal in location. The florets are single with bracts that are smaller in size than the calyx. The florets are pink in colour with a darker pink eye zone at the center. There are no petal markings. The stamens are greenish yellow in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' resulted from a cross between wild type Verbena calliantha f. rosea native to Brazil as the female parent and 'Rainbow Carpet Red' as the pollen plant. This cross was performed at the Hakushu Nursery Center of Suntory Ltd. in March of 1996. Propagation of the selected seedling was carried out asexually from the spring of 1997 to the autumn of 1998.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Sunmaref TP-SAP' were conducted in a greenhouse at Norseco Inc., Boisbriand, Quebec during the summer of 2002. The trials consisted of twelve plants per variety. The plants were grown in 25 cm hanging baskets, three per basket. Unless indicated otherwise, measured characteristics were based on twelve measurements.
