Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Wynena' (Babylon Purple)

Summary: 'Darlena' has a narrower plant width than 'Wynena'. The stems of 'Darlena' have no anthocyanin while the stems of 'Wynena' have medium anthocyanin. 'Darlena' has a shorter, less columniform inflorescence than 'Wynena'. 'Darlena' differs from 'Wynena' in flower colour.

Description:

'Darlena' is an annual verbena variety which has a semi-creeping growth habit. The stems have medium to dense pubescence and are light green in colour with no anthocyanin colouration. The leaves are deltoid in shape with an attenuate shaped base. The leaf blade is dissected with an acute apex on each division. The upper side of the leaf blade is dark green in colour with no anthocyanin. The upper side of the leaf blade has weak pubescence and the lower side has weak to medium pubescence on the veins only.

The inflorescence is domed to columniform in profile and both axillary and terminal in location. The calyx has no anthocyanin colouration and the bracts are smaller in size in relation to the calyx. The florets are single and the corolla lobes are free to touching. The corolla has one colour which does not fade as it ages. The corolla has an eye present which is pink in colour and the throat hairs are yellow-green in colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Darlena' originated from a cross made in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands in 1999 between W720 and T593. W720 was a non commercial verbena with rose coloured flower colour and a spreading growth habit. T593 was a non commercial verbena with scarlet flower colour and a semi-erect habit. 'Darlena' was selected for mildew resistance and flower colour.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Darlena' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2003 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of the candidate and reference variety. Plants were grown from unrooted cuttings, stuck September 4, 2003, and transplanted into 11.5cm pots on September 21, 2003. All colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
