Summary: 'Lan Depink' has a more upright growth habit than 'Sunmariripi'. The shape of the leaf base is truncate for 'Lan Depink' while it is cuneate for 'Sunmariripi'. 'Lan Depink' has a larger inflorescence diameter than 'Sunmariripi'. 'Lan Depink' has a darker flower colour than 'Sunmariripi'. The corolla of 'Lan Depink' has a larger eye and fades less as it ages than the corolla of 'Sunmariripi'.
Description:
'Lan Depink' has a semi upright growth habit. The stem has dense pubescence and is light green in colour with strong anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade is ovate in shape with a truncate shaped base. The leaf blade is not lobed and has crenate margin incisions. The leaf blade is medium green in colour and has weak anthocyanin on the upper side.
The inflorescence of 'Lan Depink' is broad ovate in profile. The calyx has anthocyanin colouration on the teeth. The corolla tube is medium in length and the tip of the hairs at the edge of the corolla tube are light green yellow in colour with a spot of pink. The corolla lobes are touching, are incurved along the longitudinal axis and have medium to strong undulation of the margin. The corolla is purple red in colour with an even colour pattern. The corolla colour fades slightly as it ages. There is a corolla eye present which is large in size and whitish green in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Lan Depink' originated from a cross made at Gilroy, California, USA in June 2001. The female parent was a pink flowered, proprietary verbena line designated 97-403-9 and the male parent was the variety 'Lan Litpur'. The initial selection was made in January 2002 based on flower colour, flower form and plant habit.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Lan Depink' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2004 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of the candidate and reference variety. Plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 15cm pots on April 14, 2004. All colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
