Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Empress Flair Purple Charm'

Summary: The plants of 'VEAZ0028' have a semi-upright growth habit whereas the plants of 'Empress Flair Purple Charm' have an upright growth habit. The main colour of the inner side of the corolla is blue violet for 'VEAZ0028' whereas the inner side of the corolla of 'Empress Flair Purple Charm' is also blue violet, but less blue. The diameter of the eye on the inner side of the corolla is small to medium for 'VEAZ0028' whereas the diameter of the eye is medium for 'Empress Flair Purple Charm'.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, broad to very broad after start of flowering
STEM: no anthocyanin colouration on middle third of actively growing stem

PETIOLE: very short to short
LEAF BLADE: short to medium length, narrow, ovate shape, no divisions, dentate incisions of margin, dark green upper side, no anthocyanin colouration of upper side

INFLORESCENCE: medium to large diameter, broad cylindrical in profile
FLOWER BUD: blue violet (RHS N88B) just before opening
CALYX: no anthocyanin colouration
FLOWER: single type, arrangement of corolla lobes is not touching
COROLLA: medium diameter
COROLLA LOBE: no curvature along longitudinal axis, weak to medium degree of undulation of margin
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): one colour distributed in shaded pattern with lighter shade towards base, blue violet (RHS N88B), no secondary colour, colour strongly fading with age
COROLLA TUBE: medium to long, tip of protruding hairs is light green yellow
COROLLA EYE: small to medium diameter, whitish green

Origin & Breeding History: 'VEAZ0028' was bred and developed by Syngenta Seeds B.V. in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. It originated from an open pollinated cross that occurred in August of 2010 between the selection designated 'L0539-4', as the female parent, and an unknown male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'VEAZ0028' was selected in August of 2011 in Enkhuizen, for its flower colour, early flowering habit and floriferousness. It was first asexually reproduced by cuttings in October 2011, in Enkhuizen, Netherlands.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'VEAZ0028' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2015/2743, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Naktuinbouw - Variety Center in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands, in 2016. The colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
