Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Empress Imperial Blue' and 'Lanai Royale Purple with Eye'

Summary: The plants of 'KLEVP15483' have a semi-upright to creeping growth habit and are wider than the plants of 'Lanai Royale Purple with Eye', which have an upright growth habit. The leaf of 'KLEVP15483' is wider than the leaf of both reference varieties. The tips of the protruding hairs of the corolla tube of 'KLEVP15483' are light green yellow whereas those of 'Empress Imperial Blue' are light purple. The newly opened corolla of 'KLEVP15483' is dark violet whereas the newly opened corolla of 'Lanai Royale Purple with Eye' is violet with blue violet tones. The fully opened corolla of 'KLEVP15483' is dark violet whereas the fully opened corolla of 'Lanai Royale Purple with Eye' is violet with dark violet at the base of the lobe. The corolla of 'KLEVP15483' has a medium sized eye present whereas the corolla of 'Empress Imperial Blue' has no eye present.

LEAF BLADE: lanceolate to ovate, no divisions, crenate margin, dark green on upper side, no anthocyanin colouration on upper side

INFLORESCENCE: broad ovate in profile
CALYX: anthocyanin colouration present only along margin of teeth
COROLLA: arrangement of lobes ranging from free to overlapping, no colour change with age
COROLLA LOBE: incurved to straight along the longitudinal axis, medium undulation of margin, one colour, even colour pattern, dark violet (RHS 83A) when newly opened, dark violet (RHS 86A) when fully opened
COROLLA EYE: medium diameter, whitish green
COROLLA TUBE: tips of protruding hairs are light green yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'KLEVP15483' originated from a controlled cross conducted by the breeder, Ruijun Li, in Cobbitty, New South Wales, Australia. The cross was made between the female parent variety, 'VC11ABV', and the male parent variety, 'VC111256', in December 2010. The resultant seedlings were selected in April 2011, in Cobbitty, Australia based on their flower colour, flowering time and resistance to powdery mildew. A single seedling was selected for commercialization and named 'KLEVP15483' in December 2014.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KLEVP15483' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2018, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15 cm diameter pots on April 18, 2018. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on June 6, 2018. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
