Variety used for comparison: 'KLEVP08383' (Lascar Burgundy)

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the stem is medium for 'RIKAV38602' whereas the intensity is absent or very weak for 'KLEVP08383'. The leaf of 'RIKAV38602' is larger than the leaf of 'KLEVP08383'. The upper side of the leaf blade is medium green for 'RIKAV38602' whereas the leaf blade is dark green for 'KLEVP08383'. The corolla of 'RIKAV38602' has an eye zone whereas the corolla of 'KLEVP08383' does not have an eye zone. The margin of the corolla lobe of 'RIKAV38602' has a medium degree of undulation whereas the margin of the corolla lobe of 'KLEVP08383' has weak undulation. The main colour of the inner side of the corolla lobe of 'RIKAV38602' is dark purple red with brown purple near the eye zone whereas the corolla lobe of 'KLEVP08383' is dark purple red with purple at the apex.

COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): one colour (excluding eye zone) in shaded pattern, distribution of colour is lighter towards apex, dark purple red (RHS 187B) with brown purple (RHS 187A) towards eye zone, no change of colour with age
COROLLA TUBE: tips of protruding hairs are white

Origin & Breeding History: 'RIKAV38602' was bred and developed by the breeder, Rika Tsutsumi, in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. It originated from a controlled cross conducted on May 20, 2013, between a seedling designated '12V258-05', as the female parent, and a seedling designated '08V665-05', as the male parent. From the resulting progeny, 'RIKAV38602' was selected on June 11, 2014, in Bonsall, California, USA, for its branching habit, flower size, and resistance to powdery mildew. Asexual reproduction of 'RIKAV38602' was first conducted by vegetative cutting on June 12, 2014, in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'RIKAV38602' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2017 at BioFlora Inc., in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into shallow, 15 cm pots on April 24, 2017. The observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or 10 parts of plants of each variety on June 7, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
