Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Spellbound'

Summary: The plants of 'PIIVIB-II' are wider than the plants of 'Spellbound'. The leaf blade and petiole of 'PIIVIB-II' are shorter than those of 'Spellbound'. The inflorescence and corolla of 'PIIVIB-II' are smaller than those of 'Spellbound'. The corolla of 'PIIVIB-II' is yellowish white while that of 'Spellbound' is white.

Description:

PLANT: shrub type, oblate shape, upright to bushy growth habit, medium density branching, fast growth rate
STEM: grey brown, medium thickness, absent or very sparse density pubescence, sparse density pubescence when young, round to angular in cross-section, smooth to rough texture of bark, absent or very weak glaucosity, few to medium number of lenticels, no thorns or spines
SHOOT: red brown

LEAF: simple type, opposite arrangement on stem, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration of petiole
LEAF BLADE: elliptic to rounded shape, acute apex, cordate to rounded base, serrate margin, no lobing, no variegation, medium rugosity, weak waviness of margin
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): absent or very sparse pubescence, sparse pubescence on veins, medium green at mid-season
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): sparse to medium density pubescence, light green at mid-season, weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of veins

INFLORESCENCE: mophead shape, umbel type
COROLLA: rotate shape, white (RHS NN155A) on inner side, white (RHS NN155B) on outer side, absent or very weak fragrance

Origin & Breeding History: 'PIIVIB-II' was bred and developed by the breeders, Michael Dirr, Oren McBee, Jeff Beasley, Mark Griffith and Rhonda Helvick in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA. It originated from an open pollination of Viburnum plicatum f. plicatum variety 'Spellbound'. 'PIIVIB-II' was selected in 2012 based on compact plant growth habit, red coloured stems on new planth growth and inflorescence number and size. Vegetative reproduction of 'PIIVIB-II' was first conducted by semi-hardwood cuttings in 2012 in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial of 'PIIVIB-II' was conducted as an outdoor irrigated container trial in the spring of 2019 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. It included a total of 10 plants of the candidate variety and 8 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings transplanted into 13 litre containers and were overwintered in a polyhouse. The trial was arranged in rows with 1 metre spacing between plants. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety. The flower characteristics were observed on April 10, 2019 while the plant characteristics were observed on June 15, 2019. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
