Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Blue & Gold' and 'Golden'
Summary: 'Illumination' produces shoots that are shorter than the reference varieties. The number of shoots are fewer in 'Illumination' than in 'Blue & Gold'. 'Illumination' has a pale yellow stem colour while the reference varieties have a pale green stem colour. There is anthocyanin colouration in the stem of 'Illumination' while not in the reference varieties. 'Illumination' has shorter internode length in the middle of the shoot than the reference varieties. The leaf is bigger in 'Illumination' than in 'Blue & Gold'. 'Illumination' has a primary leaf colour of yellow while in the reference varieties it is green. The secondary leaf colour of 'Illumination' is green while in the reference varieties it is yellow.
Description:
'Illumination' is a perennial which has a spreading or trailing growth habit with sparse branching. The stems are pale yellow in colour and have weak to medium anthocyanin colouration. The stems have no glaucosity and sparse to medium pubescence. The stems are small in diameter and smooth.
The leaves are opposite in arrangement and simple. 'Illumination' has an ovate shaped leaf with an obtuse apex and base and entire margin. The leaf blade is variegated. The main colour on the upper side is yellow and the secondary colour is medium to dark green. The secondary colour is located on the margin and covers a small area. There is a petiole present.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Illumination' was discovered as a naturally occurring sport in a garden patch of a common green leafed Vinca minor in 1995. The new variety was selected on the basis of unique yellow cream coloured variegated foliage with dark green margins.
Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Illumination' were conducted at BioFlora Inc., St. Thomas, Ontario in the summer of 2002. The trials consisted of fifteen plants each of the 'Illumination' and 'Blue & Gold' and ten plants of 'Golden'. All plants were grown outdoors and moved into a poly house in late August for evaluation. Unless indicated all measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
