Origin & Breeding History: 'Sunvioki' originated from a cross made in April 2000, at the Omi R&D Center, Suntory Flowers Ltd., in Shiga-ken, Japan. The female parent was a breeding line named '9V-39a' and the male parent was the variety 'Alpine Sun'. Seeds obtained from the cross were sown in August 2000 and from this planting, 20 seedlings were obtained. From the 20 seedlings, 3 seedlings were selected in view of highly spreading growth habit and yellow petals. The selected seedlings were grown and tested during potting and bedding trials from October 2001. From the 3 seedlings one plant was selected for its long blooming period.

Tests & Trials: 'Sunvioki' was tested in a polyhouse during the spring of 2005, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 11 cm pots on May 9, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the RHS Colour Chart 2001. Measured characteristics were based on ten plant measurements.
