Origin & Breeding History: 'SP7' originated from a cross between the variety 'SP-6' and the inbred line ED268 conducted in the summer of 2011 in Woodland, California, USA. The new variety was initially selected for its flowering characteristics and desease resistances. From the winter of 2012 to 2015 it was subsequently transplanted into an open field and greenhouses, self pollinated and further evaluated for male flowering characteristics, flowering time and disease resistances. By the winter of 2015 the F10 family was grown in Khon Kaen, Thailand and bulk seed was harvested for larger open field trials in 2015 and 2016. The summer of 2015 the resulting F11 family from the bulk seed harvest was also sown in the greenhouse and into the open field in Woodland, California. 'SP7' was again selected from the trials for is male flowering characteristics, disease resistance, flower time and flower size.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'SP7' is based on the UPOV Report of Technical Examination, reference number WTR340, purchased from the Naktuinbouw in Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands. The trials were conducted by the Naktuinbouw from 2018 to 2019.
