Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Bramwell'

Summary: The plants of 'SMWFDFPD' are narrower than those of 'Bramwell'. The shoot of 'SMWFDFPD' has a shorter internode length with a greater number of nodes than that of 'Bramwell', which has a longer internode length with fewer nodes. The leaf blade of 'SMWFDFPD' is smaller than that of 'Bramwell'. (The upper side of the leaf blade of 'SMWFDFPD' has a light green midrib and veins while that of 'Bramwell' has a dark brown green midrib and dark brown veins??? Images & trial exam results do not show this.)

Description:

PLANT: medium vigour, erect to semi-erect growth habit
ONE-YEAR-OLD-SHOOT: light brown, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration in early spring
LEAF BLADE: obovate shaped, many incisions along margin, weak to medium undulation of margin
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): mainly dark brown (closest to RHS 200A) with light green (closest to RHS 144D) at midrib and light green (closest to 144C) along veins in summer, no variegation, weak degree of blistering
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): brown green (closest to RHS 146B-C) when mature in summer, absent or very sparse pubescence
Why were no flower characteristics collected, guessing plants didn't flower in 2022? I have an exam report indicating RV flowered and outer side was dark purple (RHS 58A/59C) with inner side dark blue pink (RHS 68A/73A)? Did CV ever flower? Distinctness Statement indicates pink flower colour.

Origin & Breeding History: 'SMWFDFPD' originated from an open pollinated cross that occurred in 2012 in Grand Haven, Michigan, U.S.A. The cross occured between the female parent 'Verweig' and an unknown male parent. From the resulting progeny, SMWFDFPD' was selected as a single plant in 2015 based on its plant growth habit, dark foliage colour and flower colour. 'SMWFDFPD' was first asexually propagated by softwood cuttings during the summer of 2015 in Grand Haven, Michigan, U.S.A.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'SMWFDFPD' was conducted outdoors during the spring and summer of 2022 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants of the candidate variety and 7 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from 10 cm rooted liners that were each planted in a 3.8 litre container during the summer of 2021. The plants were overwintered in a polyhouse, and moved outdoors in May 2022 to a drip irrigated field and arranged in rows with approximately 1 metre spacing between plants. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on July 14, 2022. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
