Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'AC Foremost'

Summary: '5700PR' is a hard red, spring wheat variety which can be distinguished from 'AC Foremost' by the attitude of the awns. The awns of '5700PR' are appressed whereas those of 'AC Foremost' are spreading. '5700PR' also has a sloping shoulder on the glume while 'AC Foremost' has a slightly sloping to rounded glume shoulder shape.

Description:

'5700PR' is a hard red, spring wheat variety. The seedlings have no anthocyanin colouration on the coleoptiles and no pubescence on the sheaths or blades of the lower leaves. At booting the plants have an erect growth habit. There is a very high frequency of plants with a recurved flag leaf. The flag leaf blade is weakly pubescent and the sheath is glabrous, with medium to strong glaucosity. The flag leaf auricles have medium anthocyanin colouration. '5700PR' matures late. The neck of the culm is moderately curved and has medium glaucosity. The pith is thin in cross-section. At maturity the straw has no anthocyanin colouration.

The spike of '5700PR' is white, inclined in attitude, tapering to parallel in shape and medium in density, with medium glaucosity. '5700PR' has medium length awns, which are white and appressed in attitude. The convex surface of the apical rachis segment is sparsely hairy. The lower glume is long and medium in width and it is moderately pubescent. The shoulder of the lower glume is sloping and narrow and the beak is medium length and moderately curved. Internal hairs on the lower glume are sparse and confined to the fold. The beak of the lemma of '5700PR' is moderately curved.

'5700PR' produces a hard red kernel, that is large and dark red in colour. The kernel is long and medium-wide. It is elliptical in shape with a rounded to angular shaped cheek. The brush hairs are medium in length. The embryo of '5700PR' is oval and large in size. The crease is narrow and shallow.

'5700PR' is resistant to common bunt (Tilletia caries, T. foetida) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici). The variety is moderately susceptible to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and common root rot (Cochliobolus sativus). '5700PR' is susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium sp.) and loose smut (Ustilago tritici).

Origin & Breeding History: '5700PR' originated from the cross N91-3051/AC Foremost which was made in Berthoud, Colorado in 1992. N91-3051 was a UGG/AgriPro experimental breeding line derived from U.S. varieties 2369 (Pioneer) and Probrand 711. A pedigree breeding method using single seed descent was used to develop this variety. Individual head selections were made from an F2 population of this cross at the Proven Seed Research Farm, Rosebank, Manitoba in 1993. Selections in the F2 were based on leaf rust, height and maturity. Single seed descent was used to advance these selctions through the F3 and F4 generations in the greenhouse. Individual F5 headrows were bulked from the 1994 selection nursery at Rosebank. F5 selection criteria were leaf rust, stem rust, height, maturity, and foliar diseases. The individual bulks (F6) were increased in an off-season nursery in New Zealand during 1994-95. Three hundred and fifty heads were randomly picked in an F7 (F4 derived) increase plot for initial purity work in 1996. Headrows were grown in Colorado in 1997. A bulk of these headrows was grown at Rosebank to produce pre-breeder seed in 1998.

Tests & Trials: Test and trials for '5700PR' were conducted at the UGG Research Farm, Rosebank, Manitoba in 2000 and 2001. In 2000 the trials consisted of 2 replicates and in 2001 there were 3 reps. Each plot measured 40 square feet and consisted of 1000 plants, spaced approximately 1 inch apart.
