Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Celtic' and 'Quantum'
Summary: '606' is a hard red, spring wheat variety which produces shorter plants than the two reference varieties 'Celtic' and 'Quantum'. The stem is less glaucous than 'Quantum' and more glaucous than 'Celtic'. The neck shape of '606' is straighter than 'Celtic', and the same as 'Quantum'. '606' also has a shorter spike and smaller kernels than 'Quantum' and 'Celtic'. The lower glume of '606' has a shorter beak than the references.
Description:
'606' is a hard red, spring wheat variety. The seedlings have no anthocyanin colouration on the coleoptiles. At booting the plants have an intermediate growth habit. There is a low frequency of plants with a recurved flag leaf. The flag leaf blade and its sheath are glabrous, with strong glaucosity on the sheath. The flag leaf auricles have no anthocyanin colouration. The neck of the culm is straight and has medium glaucosity. The pith is thin in cross-section. At maturity the straw has no anthocyanin colouration.
The spike of '606' is white, erect in attitude, tapering to parallel in shape and medium in density, with medium glaucosity. '606' has long awns, which are spreading in attitude. The lower glume is medium to long, medium in width and it has a slightly sloping, narrow to medium shoulder. The beak of the glume is short and straight.
'606' produces a medium-sized, hard red kernel, that is medium red in colour. The kernel is short to medium-long and is medium-wide. It is ovate in shape with a rounded cheek. The brush hairs are short. The embryo of '606' is ovate and medium in size. The crease is medium in width and depth.
Origin & Breeding History: '606' originated from the cross Kent/B564//SO/3/Kent/2*B564//Sap/4/Hege312-75-262/Chat"S". The original cross was made in 1989 in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany and pedigree selection was used from the F1 to F6. Selection in the F7 and F8 was under Canadian conditions and the criteria were yield, high protein and good quality. Breeder seed was first bulked in the F8.
Tests & Trials: Test and trials for '606' were conducted at C&M Seeds, Palmerston, Ontario in 2000 and 2001. The trials consisted of 4 replicates in a randomized complete block design. Each rep. was 4.0 metres x 1.0 metre and consisted of 8 rows. The planting rate was 400 seeds per square metre. Measured characteristics were based 20 measurements.
