Variety Description

Summary: 'Harvest' has a stronger intensity of anthocyanin colouration in the coleoptile examined at the four leaf stage than either 'AC Barrie', or 'AC Domain'. The frequency of plants with recurved or drooping flag leaves is less in 'Harvest' than in 'AC Barrie'. 'Harvest' is slightly shorter in height than'AC Barrie', and 'AC Domain'. The glaucosity of the neck of the culm or stem in 'Harvest' is stronger than in 'AC Barrie'. 'Harvest' has a wider shoulder of the lower glume than either 'AC Barrie' or 'AC Domain'. The kernel shape is broad elliptical in 'Harvest' while it is oval in 'AC Domain'. 'Harvest' has a lower tendency to pre-harvest sprouting than 'AC Barrie'. 'Harvest' is more susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum) than 'AC Barrie'. 'Harvest' has better resistance to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) than either 'AC Barrie', or 'AC Domain'.

Description:

'Harvest' is a hard red spring wheat that has very sparse to no pubescence on the sheaths or blades of the lower leaves. It has an erect to semi erect growth habit with a medium frequency of plants with recurved or drooping flag leaves. The flag leaf has very sparse to no pubescence on the blade or sheath, no anthocyanin colouration of the leaf auricles and a strong glaucosity. 'Harvest' matures mid season. The neck of the culm or stem has weak to medium glaucosity and is slightly curved. The straw has no anthocyanin colouration and has a thin thickness for the pith when looking at a cross section.

'Harvest' has a parallel sided shaped spike that is medium to dense in density, erect in attitude and white in colour with weak glaucosity at maturity. The spike has awnlets that are very short to short. The lower glume of the spikelet is medium in width, and length with absent to very sparse pubescence. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume is slightly sloping and medium to broad in width. The beak of the lower glume is short and slightly curved in shape. The shape of the beak of the lemma is slightly curved. 'Harvest' has a hard red kernel type that is light red in colour and small in size being short in length, and mid wide in width. The broad elliptical shaped kernel has a round to angular cheek shape, mid long brush hairs, and a mid size oval shaped embryo. The kernel crease is narrow to mid wide in width and shallow to mid deep in depth. 'Harvest' has good resistance to shattering, and pre harvest sprouting and good bread making qualities. 'Harvest' is resistant to moderately resistant to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and loose smut (Ustilago tritici), moderately susceptible to susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum), common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida), Septoria nodorum blotch (Septoria nodorum) and tan spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis) and is susceptible to spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus) and Septoria tritici blotch (Septoria tritici).

Origin & Breeding History: 'Harvest' derives from a cross AC Domain*2/ND640 which was produced at the Cereal Research Center, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1991. After two rounds of selection, increase and testing for disease resistance, end use quality and agronomic characteristics, a head designated 91B14-BP2E was selected in F6, increased and entered in preliminary yield trial in F8. Following two years of testing in multi location yield trials in 1996, and 1997, 91B14-BP2E was entered in the Central Bread Wheat Coop in 1998.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Glenlea Research Farm, Glenlea, Manitoba in the years 2001, and 2002. Plots consisted of 5 rows, with row spacing of 18cm, with 950 seeds planted per plot. Plot size was 3.25 square meters. There were 4 replicates.
