Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'AC Crystal'

Summary: '5701PR' differs from the reference variety 'AC Crystal' in culm neck curvature and glume shoulder shape. The culm of '5701PR' at maturity is very strongly curved whereas it is straight in 'AC Crystal'. The glume shoulders of '5701PR' are slightly sloping whereas they are straight to elevated in 'AC Crystal'.

Description:

'5701PR' is a Prairie spring red wheat with no anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile. The sheaths of the lower seedling leaves are glabrous with very slight to slight pubescence on the blades. It has an erect growth habit with rectilinear flag leaves. The flag leaf blade and sheath are glabrous, with weak anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles and strong glaucosity of the sheath. '5701PR' matures mid to late season. The culm has strong glaucosity and is very strongly curved at maturity. The straw has no anthocyanin colouration at maturity and the pith is thin in cross section.

'5701PR' has a parallel-sided spike that is medium in density, erect in attitude, white in colour with strong glaucosity at maturity. The spike has awns that are long, spreading and white. Hairiness of the convex surface of the apical rachis segment is medium. The lower glume of the spikelet is medium in width and long with weak to medium pubescence. The shoulder of the lower glume is slightly sloping and medium in width. The beak of the lower glume is slightly curved and medium in length. The internal hairs of the lower glume are sparse. The beak of the lemma is slightly curved.

The kernels of '5701PR' are medium red in colour, large, mid-long to long, and medium in width. The elliptical-shaped kernel has an angular cheek with mid-long brush hairs, and a mid-size oval-shaped embryo. The kernel crease is mid-wide and mid-deep.

'5701PR' has good bread making qualities. It is susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum), and moderately susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) and Loose smut (Ustilago tritici). It is resistant to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici).

Origin & Breeding History: '5701PR' originated from the cross "N89-3004/N87-0446//Oslo" made in Berthoud, Colorado in 1993. N89-3004 was a United Grain Growers/AgriPro experimental breeding line derived from the cross "CIMMYT Bulk Selection//Oslo". A modified pedigree breeding method using single seed descent was used in developing the variety. Individual head selections were made from an F2 population of this cross at the Proven Seed Research Farm at Rosebank, Manitoba in 1994. Selections in the F2 were based on leaf rust resistance, height and maturity. The F3 and F4 generations were advanced in the greenhouse using the single seed descent method. Individual F5 headrows were bulked from the 1995 selection nursery at Rosebank. Selection criteria for this generation included those previously used along with resistance to stem rust, tan spot and Septoria leaf spot. The F6 generation was increased in an off-season nursery in New Zealand during 1995-96. One of these selections was designated N96-3064 and was tested in Proven Seed research plots in 1996 and 1997. It was tested as HY962 in the High Yield Co-op trials during the 1998 to 2000 seasons.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials for '5701PR' were conducted at Rosebank, Manitoba during the summers of 2001 and 2002. Each plot consisted of three replicates/variety with six rows/replicate. The plots were approximately 3.6 square metres.
