Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Clair', 'CDC Harrier', 'CDC Kestrel' and 'AC Readymade'

Summary: 'McClintock' has a shorter flag leaf than the reference varieties. The flag leaf is narrower in 'McClintock' than in 'CDC Clair', and 'CDC Harrier'. At maturity 'McClintock', has a white coloured spike while 'AC Readymade' has a reddish brown spike .'McClintock' has a longer spike than 'CDC Clair' and 'AC Readymade' but shorter than 'CDC Harrier', and 'CDC Kestrel'. The beak of the lower glume is medium in length in 'McClintock' and 'CDC Clair' while it is long in 'CDC Harrier' and 'CDC Kestrel' and short to medium in 'AC Readymade'. 'McClintock' heads earlier than the reference varieties. 'McClintock' is taller than 'CDC Clair'. The bread making quality of 'McClintock' is fair to good while it is fair for 'CDC Clair' and poor for 'CDC Harrier', and 'CDC Kestrel'. 'McClintock' is moderately resistant to septoria tritici blotch (Septoria tritici), while 'AC Readymade' is moderately susceptible, and 'CDC Clair, 'CDC Harrier', and 'CDC Kestrel' are susceptible. 'McClintock' is resistant to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), while 'AC Readymade' is highly susceptible, 'CDC Clair', and 'CDC Kestrel' are susceptible to highly susceptible and 'CDC Harrier' is susceptible to leaf rust and moderately resistant to stem rust.

Description:

'McClintock' is a hard red winter wheat variety with semi-erect growth habit. The coleoptile at the four leaf stage is absent or very weak in anthocyanin colouration. The sheaths and leaf blade of the lower leaves have no pubescence. The flag leaf blade has absent to very weak pubescence, and the flag leaf sheath has no pubescence with weak glaucosity. The flag leaf auricles have absent to very weak anthocyanin colouration. 'McClintock' matures early in the season. The culm has very weak to weak glaucosity and is slightly curved at maturity. The straw has no anthocyanin colouration, and is thin in thickness when looking at the pith in cross section. The spike has a tapered to parallel sided shape, with medium length spreading white awns, medium density, and with very weak to weak glaucosity. At maturity the spike is incline (30 to 90 degrees) in attitude and white in colour. The lower glume is narrow to medium in width, medium in length, and glabrous. The shoulder of the lower glume is slightly sloping with very narrow to narrow width. The beak of the lower glume is moderately curved, and medium in length. The lower glume has sparse internal hairs. The shape of the lemma is slightly curved.

'McClintock' has a hard red kernel type which is medium red in colour, and is medium in size. The kernel is medium in length and width. The elliptical shaped kernel has a rounded cheek, and short to mid-long brush hairs. Observed from the dorsal view the germ is small in size and oval in shape. The kernel crease is mid-wide and mid-deep. The phenol colouration of the kernel is very dark. 'McClintock' has fair to good winter survival, and fair to good bread making quality. 'McClintock' is moderately resistant to Septoria tritici blotch (Septoria tritici), and resistant to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici).

Origin & Breeding History: 'McClintock' originated from a cross between GN567=VT2222(VT1215//VPM/Moisson) and Norstar in 1987 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 'VT2222' was selected as a parent because of its good stem, and leaf rust resistance and was noted to have resistance to septoria leaf blotch. F2 seed was produced in the greenhouse and then was planted as spaced plants in a fallow field at Glenlea in the fall of 1989. F2 heads were selected from the field in 1990 and planted as single plant rows in a rust nursery at the University of Manitoba Winnipeg field site. In 1990 the F3 rows were evaluated and selected based on stem and leaf rust resistance, plant height, maturity, lodging resistance and general appearance. The F3 to F5 generations were handled as bulks in rust nursery rows from 1991-1993. In the fall of 1993 single heads were selected from the F5 rust nursery rows and planted as F5-derived F6 rows. In 1994 the head rows were evaluated for stem and leaf rust resistance, plant height, maturity, lodging resistance, and quality. 'UM5089' was harvested as a single F5-derived F6 row and advanced to replicated multi-location preliminary and advanced yield trials in 1995-1997. Selection was based on yield, winter survival, plant height, lodging resistance, stem and leaf rust resistance, uniformity, kernel characteristics, quality, and general agronomic performance. 'UM5089' was entered into the Central Hard Red Winter Wheat Cooperative Trial in the fall of 1997 and evaluated in 1997-98, 1998-99, and 1999-00.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2001and 2002. Plots consisted of six rows spaced 17 cm apart, and 3 metres in length. There were 8 replicates laid out in an RCB design. Unless otherwise indicated, measured characteristics were based on 5 measurements per plot.
