Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Teal' and 'AC Barrie'

Summary: 'CDC Imagine' has a slightly longer flag leaf than 'AC Barrie'. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume of 'CDC Imagine' is slightly sloping while it is straight in 'AC Barrie'. 'CDC Imagine' has longer kernel brush hairs than 'AC Barrie'. 'CDC Imagine' is resistant to the Imidazolinone herbicides while 'CDC Teal' and 'AC Barrie' are not.

Description:

'CDC Imagine' is a hard red spring wheat that has very sparse to no pubescence on the sheaths or blades of the lower leaves. It has a semi erect growth habit with a high to very high frequency of plants with recurved or drooping flag leaves. The flag leaf has very sparse to no pubescence on the blade or sheath, no anthocyanin colouration of the leaf auricles and a weak to medium glaucosity for the sheath. The neck of the culm or stem has weak glaucosity and is very slightly curved. The straw has no anthocyanin colouration and has a thin thickness for the pith when looking at a cross section.

'CDC Imagine' has a parallel sided shaped spike that is medium in density, erect to incline in attitude and white in colour with weak glaucosity at maturity. The spike has awnlets that are short. The lower glume of the spikelet is medium in width, and length with absent to very sparse pubescence. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume is slightly sloping and medium in width. The beak of the lower glume is medium in length and slightly curved in shape. The shape of the beak of the lemma is slightly curved. 'CDC Imagine' has a hard red kernel type that is medium red in colour and medium in size being midlong and mid wide. The ovate shaped kernel has an angular cheek shape, mid long brush hairs, and a mid size oval shaped embryo. The kernel crease is mid wide and mid deep. 'CDC Imagine' has good bread making qualities. 'CDC Imagine' is highly susceptible to Septoria tritici blotch (Septoria tritici) susceptible to tan spot (Pyrenophora tritici-repentis), Septoria nodorum blotch (Septoria nodorum), and Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum), moderately susceptible to leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) and stem rust (Puccinia graminis f.sp. tritici), moderately susceptible to moderately resistant to common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida), moderately resistant to spot blotch (Cochliobolus sativus) and resistant to moderately resistant to loose smut (Ustilago tritici).

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Imagine' derives from a cross CDC Teal*4/Fidel(FS2). 'CDC Teal' is a University of Saskatchewan Canadian Western Red Spring wheat registered in Canada. Fidel is an imidazolinone tolerant mutant developed by American Cyanamid (now BASF) by sodium azide mediated seed mutagenesis of the French winter wheat cultivar 'Fidel'. The tolerance gene was partially backcrossed into the cultivar 'CDC Teal'. The herbicide Imazamox was used as the selection agent in greenhouse grown seedlings. A single F4 plant was selected. Replicated field trials were conducted in 1998 at the Crop Development Center, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. An experimental line identified as W98501 was advanced to the 1999 Western Bread Wheat Coop test, and tested as BW758. BW758 was retested in 2000 and 2001 in the Western Bread Wheat Coop test.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the University of Saskatchewan's Seed Farm, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2002 and 2003. Plots consisted of 5 rows, 3.6 metres long, with row spacing of 20.3 cm. Seeding rate was 1200 seeds per plot. Plot area size was 3.6 square meters. There were 4 replications in a RCB design.
