Varieties used for comparison: 'Shaw' and 'CDC Utmost'
Summary: The spike of 'AAC Prevail' has strong glaucosity whereas the spike of 'Shaw' has weak glaucosity. The shoulder shape of the lower glume is straight for 'AAC Prevail' whereas it is slightly sloping for 'CDC Utmost'. 'AAC Prevail' has a light red kernel whereas 'CDC Utmost' has a dark red kernel. The germ shape of 'AAC Prevail' is round whereas the germ shape of 'Shaw' is elliptical.
Description:
PLANT: common hard red spring type, semi-erect to intermediate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season
SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: strong glaucosity, straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section
SPIKE: strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, lax to medium density, erect attitude, yellow at maturity, sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNLETS: awnlets from tip of spike shorter than spike length
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium to wide, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Prevail' (experimental designation 'BW462') originated from the cross '99B60-EJ26'/'Somerset' conducted at the Cereal Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 2004. In 2005, from the resultant 605 progeny, doubled haploids were created. In 2006-2007, plants were grown in rows at the winter nursery near Leeston, New Zealand. Selection criteria included height, lodging, maturity, and leaf and stem rust resistance, Fusarium head blight resistance and well as bread making quality attributes. From 2007 to 2009, yield tests and selections for agronomic characteristics was conducted. In 2010, 'BW462' was included in the Central Bread Wheat Committee registration test.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Prevail' were conducted during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Plots consisted of four replications organized in a randomized complete block design with each plot consisting of 5 rows with a row length of 2.98 m and a row spacing of 18 cm.
