Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'Elgin ND' is absent or very weak whereas it is strong for 'Faller' and medium for 'Glenn'. 'Elgin ND' heads earlier than 'Faller' and later than 'Glenn'. The plants of 'Elgin ND' are taller than those of 'Faller'. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume of 'Elgin ND' is slightly sloping whereas it is straight for 'Faller' and straight to elevated for 'Glenn'. The thousand kernel weight of 'Elgin ND' is less than that of 'Faller' and more than that of 'Glenn'.

Description:

PLANT: hard red spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: curvature absent
STRAW: thin pith in cross-section at maturity, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: absent or very weak glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, lax to medium density, inclined attitude, white at maturity, absent or very sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, shorter than length of the spike
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, slightly sloping shape

Origin & Breeding History: 'Elgin ND' (experimental designation 'ND818') is the result of the final cross using the modified pedigree and bulk methods made at North Dakota State University, Fargo, North Dakota in the fall of 1999. The pedigree is 'Reeder'/'Walworth'. The F1 plants were grown in a greenhouse at NDSU in the spring of 2000. The F2 to F5 were selected, threshed individually and advanced. In the fall 2001 to spring 2002, the F5:6 generation was advanced and increased in a winter nursery in Christchurch, New Zealand, harvested in bulk and included in the Preliminary Yield Trials in the summer of 2002. Five spikes from a selected plot were harvested, threshed in bulk and sent to New Zealand for purification and seed increase. The F6:7 were harvested in bulk and sent for Advanced/Elite Yield Trials beginning in the summer of 2003. From 2003 to 2008, the F8 to F13 were tested in Elite yield trials at various North Dakota State University research farm locations state wide. In 2009, 'ND818' was designated from one hundred spikes which were selected for seed purification and increase. 'ND818' was released in January 2013 as 'Elgin ND'. Selection criteria in the early generations included plant vigor, height, maturity and pest resistance. In later generations, selection criteria included grain yield, lodging resistance, shattering resistance, test and kernel weights, disease resistance and milling and bread making qualities.

Tests & Trials: The trials were conducted in 2014 at C&M Seeds in Palmerston, Ontario. Plots consisted of 8 rows with a row length of 4 meters and a row spacing of 15 cm. Planting density was 400 seeds per meter squared. There were 3 replicates arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements from one year of data. Results were supported by the official technical examination report purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, USA Plant Variety Protection Office number 201300367.
