Variety used for comparison: 'McKenzie'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile of 'SY637' is absent or very weak whereas it is medium for 'McKenzie'. The flag leaves of 'SY637' are longer and wider than those of 'McKenzie'. The spike of 'SY637' has strong glaucosity whereas that of 'McKenzie' has weak. At maturity, the spike attitude of 'SY637' is erect whereas that of 'McKenzie' is inclined to nodding. The kernel cheek of 'SY637' is angular whereas it is rounded for 'McKenzie'. The brush hairs on the kernel of 'SY637' are short whereas they are medium to long on 'McKenzie'.

PLANT: hard red spring type, semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: strong glaucosity, curvature absent
STRAW: medium to thick pith in cross-section at maturity, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: strong glaucosity at heading, parallel-sided shape in profile, medium density, erect attitude, white at maturity, medium to dense hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, shorter than length of the spike
LOWER GLUME: short to medium length, medium to wide, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, elevated shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: very short, straight
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak

KERNEL: light red colour, medium size, medium length and width, broad elliptical to elliptical shape, angular cheek shape, short brush hairs, medium width of crease, shallow to medium depth of crease
GERM: medium size, oval shape

Origin & Breeding History: 'SY637' (experimental designation '052015-13' and 'PT637') originated from the cross 'BW337' / 'AC Elsa', made in Berthoud, Colorado, USA in 2005. In 2006, individual head selections were taken from an F2 population screened for height, maturity and disease resistance at the Syngenta Canada, Inc. breeding nursery in Rosebank, Manitoba. Single seed descent technique was used to advance these selections through F3 and F4 generations in the greenhouse and in the summer of 2007, F5 head-rows were individually bulked. In 2008, the individual bulks in the F6 generation were screened for agronomic performance and disease resistance. In 2009, preliminary yield trials were conducted in a two location observation nursery in Rosebank and Souris, Manitoba. One of the bulk selections was designated '052015-13' and tested in research plots in 2010. During the 2011 to 2013 growing seasons, it was tested as 'PT637' in the Parkland Bread Wheat Cooperative trials.

Tests & Trials: The trials for 'SY637' were conducted in Rosebank, Manitoba during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Plots consisted of 7 rows spaced 18 cm apart. The plot size was approximately 1.2 metres wide by 3.0 metres in length, containing 2400 plants per plot. There were 3 replications arranged in a RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year.
