Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: '25R47' and '25R51'
Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is medium for '25R25' whereas it is absent to very weak for '25R51'. The spike length (excluding awns) of '25R25' is longer than both reference varieties. '25R25' has a very short to short lower glume beak whereas '25R51' has a very long glume beak. The kernel colouration with phenol is light to medium for '25R25' whereas the kernel colouration with phenol is dark for '25R51'.
Description:
PLANT: common soft red winter type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season
SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: weak to medium glaucosity, straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: weak glaucosity at heading, tapering to parallel sided in profile, medium density, erect attitude, white at maturity, sparse to medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white to light brown, awns from tip of spike slightly shorter than spike
LOWER GLUME: medium length, very narrow to narrow, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, slopping to slightly sloping shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: very short to short, slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak
KERNEL: medium red, medium size, medium length, narrow to medium width, broad elliptical shape, rounded cheek shape, medium length brush hairs, narrow and shallow crease
GERM: small to medium size, broad elliptical shape
AGRONOMICS: good resistance to pre-harvest sprouting
PASTRY AND BISCUIT QUALITY: fair
DISEASE REACTION: moderately resistant to Septoria Tritici Blotch (Mycosphaerella graminicola), Powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici), Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum), and Wheat soil borne mosaic virus; moderately susceptible to Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina)
Origin & Breeding History: '25R25' (experimental designation 'XW12L') originated from the cross W950430P2/25R42//25R47 made in 2003 in Windfall, Indiana, USA. In 2004, F1 seed was grown in a transplant nursery. In 2004 and 2005, bulk populations were grown in Princeton and Windfall, Indiana. In 2006 to 2007, F4 plants were grown in 3 row observation plots located in Princeton and Windfall. In 2007-2008, F5 plants were grown in 3 row observation plots located in Princeton and Windfall. Spike selections were harvested from the Windfall site. In 2008-2009, twenty headrows, each of the F5 selections, were grown at Windfall and Princeton. Selected rows were individually harvested at the Windfall location. From 2009 to 2012, preliminary, advanced, and elite yield testing was conducted under experimental designation 'W040208H1'.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for '25R25' were conducted during the 2013 and 2015 growing seasons at Caledon, Ontario. Plots consisted of 3 replications arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Plots were 6 metres long with 0.3 metre row spacing resulting in approximately 2600 plants per plot. Measured characteristics were based on 24 measurements per plant or parts of plants, resulting in a total of 48 measurements over 2 years. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
