Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Abound', 'CDC Thrive' and '859CL'

Summary: The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'BW942' is absent or very weak whereas it is strong for 'CDC Abound'. The flag leaves of 'BW942' are wider than those of 'CDC Abound' and '859CL'. The spikes of 'BW942' are awned whereas those of 'CDC Thrive' are apically awnletted. The plants of 'BW942' are taller than those of 'CDC Abound' and '859CL'. The hairiness of the convex surface of the apical rachis segment of 'BW942' is dense whereas 'CDC Abound' and 'CDC Thrive' have medium density of hairiness. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume of 'BW942' is elevated whereas it is straight for 'CDC Thrive' and '859CL'.

Description:

PLANT: hard red spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures early to mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves, medium green

FLAG LEAF: medium green, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, weak glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: weak glaucosity, weak to medium curvature
STRAW: very thin pith in cross-section at maturity, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: very weak glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, erect attitude, white at maturity, strong density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, shorter than to equal in length to length of the spike
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, elevated shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, very slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: very slightly curved beak

KERNEL: medium red colour, medium size, medium length and width, elliptical shape, rounded to slightly angular cheek shape, medium length brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical shape

HERBICIDE REACTION: resistant to imidazolinones

Origin & Breeding History: 'BW942' was selected from the cross 'BW755' / 'CDC Teal 11A'// '2*ND694' made in the fall of 2001 at the Crop Development Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1, F2 and F3 generations of this population were grown in a growth chamber. The F4 was grown in a bulk plot in Saskatoon in 2004. Seed from an F4 spike selection was grown in a rust nursery at Saskatoon in 2005 as an F5 hill and selected based on rust reaction, plant type and straw strength. In 2006, seed from an F5 spike was grown in an F6 hill in a rust nursery and was used as a source for entry into an unreplicated yield trial nursery where it was further selected for yield, height and straw strength. The F2 through F7 were treated with imidazolinone rates in excess of 40 grams active ingredient per hectare. 'BW942' was evaluated as IR08057 in replicated trials in 2008, in the Western Bread Wheat 'B' Test in 2009 and subsequently evaluated in the Western Bread Wheat Cooperative Test from 2010 to 2012.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted during the summers of 2013 and 2014 at the Crop Science Field Laboratory of the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.6 meters and a row spacing of 23 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year.
