Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Barrie', 'Unity' and 'CDC Utmost'
Summary: The spikes of 'CDC Titanium' are awned whereas those of 'AC Barrie' and 'CDC Utmost' are apically awnletted. The awns of 'CDC Titanium' are longer than the spike whereas those of 'AC Barrie' and 'CDC Utmost' are shorter than the length of the spike and those of 'Unity' are shorter than or equal to the length of the spike. The spikes of 'CDC Titanium' are shorter than those of 'AC Barrie' and 'CDC Utmost'. The shape of the beak of the lower glume of 'CDC Titanium' is straight to slightly curved whereas it is slightly curved to moderately curved for 'Unity'. The beak of the lower glume of 'CDC Titanium' is long whereas it is very short for 'AC Barrie', medium length for 'Unity' and short for 'CDC Utmost'.
Description:
PLANT: hard red spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures early to mid-season
SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves, medium green
FLAG LEAF: medium green, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, weak curvature
STRAW: very thin pith in cross-section at maturity, no anthocyanin colouration
SPIKE: absent or very weak glaucosity at heading, tapering shape in profile, medium density, erect attitude, white at maturity, medium density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, longer than length of the spike
LOWER GLUME: medium long to long, medium width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, straight shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, very slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight beak
KERNEL: medium red colour, medium size, medium length and width, oval shape, rounded cheek shape, medium length brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease
GERM: medium size, oval shape
DISEASE REACTION: moderately resistant to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species), moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) and Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), moderately susceptible to Loose smut (Ustilago tritici) and resistant to Leaf rust (Puccina recondita)
INSECT REACTION: resistant to Orange wheat blossom midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana)
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Titanium' (experimental name 'PT584') was selected from the cross 'BW282' / P00.06-66 made in the fall of 2001 at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1 was grown in the field in 2002 with the F2 grown as a bulk in Saskatoon during the summer of 2003. The F3 was grown in a winter nursery with the F4 grown in a space-planted nursery in Saskatoon in 2004. Seed from an F4 spike selection was grown in a rust nursery at Saskatoon in 2005 as an F5 hill and selected based on rust reaction, plant type and straw strength. Seed from the bulked F5 hill was used as a source for entry in an unreplicated yield trial nursery in Saskatoon in 2006 and subject to selection for improved yield, height and straw strength. 'CDC Titanium' was evaluated as W07188 in a replicated test at Kernen Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon and at various sites throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba and in the Western Bread Wheat B Test in 2009. 'CDC Titanium' was subsequently evaluated in the Western Bread Wheat Cooperative Test from 2010 to 2012 as 'PT584'.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted during the summers of 2013 and 2014 at the Crop Science Field Laboratory of the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.6 meters and a row spacing of 23 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year.
