Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '25R40' and 'CM249'

Summary: The flag leaves of 'DS572SRW' are longer than those of both reference varieties. The plant height of 'DS572SRW' is taller than both reference varieties. The spike of 'DS572SRW' is longer than that of both reference varieties. At maturity, the spike attitude of 'DS572SRW' is nodding whereas it is erect for both reference varieties. The beak of the lower glume of 'DS572SRW' is medium to long whereas it is short on 'CM249'.

Description:

PLANT: soft red winter type, semi-erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, heading is mid-season, medium to late maturity

SEEDLING: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, medium to strong density of pubescence of lower leaf sheath, very weak density of pubescence of the lower leaf blade

FLAG LEAF: very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, strong glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous sheath and blade

CULM: weak to medium glaucosity at heading, weak curvature of neck

SPIKE: medium glaucosity at heading, tapering to parallel sided shape, medium density, white, nodding attitude, dense hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS (AT MATURITY): equal in length to length of spike, white, spreading
LOWER GLUME: medium width and length, sparse pubescence, sparse to medium extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, slightly sloping shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, strongly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: moderately curved beak shape

STRAW: thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity

KERNEL: medium to dark red, large size, medium length, midwide to wide, elliptical, rounded to angular cheek shape, mid-long brush hairs, narrow and mid-deep crease
GERM: mid-sized, round

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: fair to good winter survival
QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS: fair to good pastry and biscuit making quality
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Barley Yellow Dwarf virus; resistant to moderately resistant to Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina); moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Septoria tritici blotch (Septoria tritici); moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species; based on inoculation trials conducted at the Nairn Research Facility in Ailsa Craig, Ontario in 2013)

Origin & Breeding History: 'DS572SRW' (experimental designations 'TW572-084', 'DANW1009', 'NC13G-009') is derived from the cross between '25R23' / 'TW060-075' made in the lab at the Nairn Research Facility, Ailsa Craig, Ontario in 2004-2005. The F1 seed was planted in the lab in 2005 and was doubled using the doubled haploid (maize pollinated) method. The F2 was planted as a single row in the nursery in the fall of 2006 and was selected for its general appearance and disease reaction. 'TW572-084' ('DS572SRW') was entered into a 2-replicate trial in the fall of 2007 and subsequent internal yield evaluations through 2010. 'DS572SRW' was tested for two years in the Orthogonal Soft Winter Wheat Trial (Ontario Cereal Crop Committee) during the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons and was supported for registration in January 2013.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'DS572SRW' were conducted during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons at the Nairn Research Facility, Ailsa Craig, Ontario. Plot size was 4.14 metres squared and consisted of 6 rows. The row length was 3.0 metres with 18 cm spacing between rows. There were 4 replicates in an RCB Design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year.
