Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity', 'Cardale' and 'Carberry'

Summary: The plants of 'CDC Bradwell' are taller than those of 'Carberry' and 'Cardale' and shorter than those of 'Unity'. The spike attitude of 'CDC Bradwell' is erect whereas that of 'Unity' is inclined. The spikes of 'CDC Bradwell' are shorter than those of 'Carberry' and 'Cardale'. The hairiness on the convex surface of the apical rachis segment of 'CDC Bradwell' is of medium density whereas it is very sparse for 'Cardale'.

Description:

PLANT: hard red spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-late season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves, medium green

FLAG LEAF: medium green, low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium glaucosity of the sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, weak curvature
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration, yellow
SPIKE: absent or very weak glaucosity at heading, parallel-sided shape in profile, medium density, erect attitude, white at maturity, medium density of hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: white, shorter than length of spike, slightly spreading
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, straight to strongly elevated with second point present
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, straight, medium extent of internal hairs
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak

KERNEL: medium red, medium size, medium length and width, oval to elliptical shape, rounded to slightly angular cheek shape, medium length brush hairs, medium width and medium depth of crease
GERM: medium size, oval shape

DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Loose smut (Ustilago tritici), Leaf rust (Puccina recondita) and Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), moderately resistant to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species) and moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida)

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Bradwell' (experimental name BW472, W09414) was selected from the cross '5602HR' / 'W02330' made in 2004 at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The F1 was grown in a winter nursery and the F2 was grown as a bulk in the field during the summer of 2005. The F3 was grown in a winter nursery with the F4 grown in a space-planted nursery in Saskatoon in 2006. Seed from an F4 spike selection was grown in a rust nursery in Saskatoon in 2007 as an F5 hill and selected based on rust reaction, plant type and straw strength. The process was repeated in 2008 in the F6. Seed from the bulked F6 hill was used as a source for entry in a replicated yield trial nursery in Saskatoon in 2009. 'CDC Bradwell' was evaluated as W09414 in a replicated test at Kernen Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon in 2009 and evaluated at various sites throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba and in the Western Bread Wheat B Test in 2010. 'CDC Bradwell' was subsequently evaluated in the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative Test from 2011 to 2013 as 'BW472'.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons at the Crop Science Field Laboratory of the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.6 meters and a row spacing of 23 cm. There were 4 replications arranged in an RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
