Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity' and 'Cardale'
Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is absent or very weak for 'AAC Jatharia' whereas the intensity is weak for both reference varieties. The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles is absent or very weak for 'AAC Jatharia' whereas the intensity is weak for 'Unity'. The length of the awn above the tip of the spike on 'AAC Jatharia' is equal to the length of the spike whereas the length of the awn above the tip of the spike on 'Unity' is shorter than the spike. The shape of the beak on the lower glume is strongly curved for 'AAC Jatharia' whereas the beak is slightly to moderately curved for 'Unity' and slightly curved for 'Cardale'.
Description:
PLANT: common hard red spring type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage
SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: low to medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: medium to strong glaucosity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): thin pith in cross-section
SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, medium density, erect attitude, yellow at maturity, sparse to medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: light brown, awns from tip of spike equal to spike length
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium to wide, pubescent
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, slightly sloping to straight shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short, strongly curved shape
KERNEL: red, medium to large, medium length and width, oval shape, rounded cheek shape, very short brush hairs, medium width and very shallow crease
GERM: medium size, oval shape
AGRONOMICS: fair resistance to pre-harvest sprouting
BREAD MAKING QUALITY: good
DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina)
PEST REACTION: resistant to wheat midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana)
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Jatharia' (experimental designation 'BW483') originated from the cross '99B60-EJ26'/'Kane' conducted at the Cereal Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 2004. In 2004, F1 plants were grown in short rows near Leeston, New Zealand. In 2005, F2 plots were grown near Glenlea, Manitoba and 200 spikes were selected based on height, lodging, maturity and resistance to rust and Fusarium head blight. Spikes were run through a rain simulator and spikes that did not produce germinated seed were advanced to the F3 stage. F3 lines were increased in a growth cabinet and subsequent F4 short rows grown in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba where selections were based on height, lodging, maturity, resistance to rust and Fusarium head blight as well as quality traits such as protein content and flour quality. Select F4 rows were harvested and increased as an F5 row in off-season nursery near Palmerston North, New Zealand during 2006 and 2007. The F5 line was harvested and then yield tested as F6 lines in 2007 at four locations (Brandon, Glenlea, Saskatoon, and Swift Current). Spikes were collected from the yield plots and increased as F7 rows in 2007-2008 at the off-season nursery near Palmerston North, New Zealand. The F7 lines were harvested and evaluated as F8 lines at three locations in western Canada. The line was advanced as an F9 to the Central Bread Wheat Committee tests where the line was evaluated from 2011 to 2013 and given the denomination 'BW483'.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Jatharia' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of three replications organized in a randomized complete block design with each plot consisting of 5 rows per replicate with a row length of 3.35 m and a row spacing of 18 cm.
