Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Unity', 'Cardale' and 'Carberry'

Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is absent or very weak for 'AAC Cameron' whereas the anthocyanin intensity is weak for 'Unity' and 'Cardale'. The plants of 'AAC Cameron' are taller than those of 'Cardale' and 'Carberry'. The lower glume of 'AAC Cameron' is pubescent whereas the reference varieties have a glabrous lower glume.

Description:

PLANT: common hard red spring type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures early to mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: medium frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: medium to strong glaucosity
STRAW (AT MATURITY): very thin pith in cross-section

SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity at heading, parallel sided in profile, medium density, incline attitude, yellow at maturity, medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: light brown, awns from tip of spike equal to spike length
LOWER GLUME: medium length and width, pubescent
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: medium width, slightly sloping to straight shape
LOWER GLUME BEAK: short to medium length, slightly to moderately curved shape

KERNEL: dark red, medium to large, medium length and width, oval shape, rounded cheek shape, very short brush hairs, narrow to medium width crease, very shallow crease
GERM: large, broad elliptical shape

AGRONOMICS: fair resistance to pre-harvest sprouting

DISEASE REACTION: moderately resistant to Common Bunt (Tilletia laevis, Tilletia tritici).

PEST REACTION: resistant to wheat midge (Sitodiplosis mosellana).

Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Cameron' (experimental designation 'BW485') originated from the cross 'D1125'/'Alsen'//'BW346'///'BW370'/'99B60-EJ26'. The crossing was made at the Cereal Research Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 2004. In 2004, F1 plants were grown in a growth cabinet at the Cereal Research Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 2005, F2 rows were grown near Rosebank, Manitoba. Selections were made for height, lodging, maturity and resistance to rust (leaf and stem) and Fusarium head blight diseases. During the winter of 2005-2006, lines were increased using F3 hills near Palmerston North, New Zealand. F4 short rows were grown in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and selected for agronomic traits (height, lodging, and maturity), disease resistance (rusts and Fusarium) as well as quality traits such as protein content and flour quality. Selected F4 row was harvested and increased during the winter of 2006-2007 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The F5 selection based on height, lodging and resistance to leaf and stripe rust was yield tested as an F6 line at three locations in western Canada. Spikes were collected from the F6 yield plots and increased as F7 rows in the 2007-2008 winter nursery in Palmerston North, New Zealand. The selected F7 line was harvested as and grown as an F8 line at three locations in western Canada. The line was advanced as an F9 to the Central Bread Wheat tests where the line was evaluated from 2011 to 2013 and was given the denomination 'BW485'.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'AAC Cameron' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the Saskatoon Research and Development centre, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Plots consisted of 5 rows with a row length of 3.35 m and a row spacing of 18 cm. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
