Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Radiant', 'Moats' and 'AC Bellatrix'
Summary: The flag leaves of 'AAC Elevate' are shorter than those of 'AC Bellatrix' and wider than those of all of the reference varieties. The frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is very low for 'AAC Elevate' whereas it is high to very high for 'Radiant' and very high for 'AC Bellatrix'. The plants of 'AAC Elevate' are shorter than those of the reference varieties. The upper culm of 'AAC Elevate' has medium to strong glaucosity whereas 'AC Bellatrix' has absent to very weak glaucosity. The spike of 'AAC Elevate' has medium to strong glaucosity whereas 'Radiant' has weak to medium and 'Moats' has very weak glaucosity. At maturity, the spike of 'AAC Elevate' is white to yellow whereas it is brown for 'Radiant'. The spike attitude of 'AAC Elevate' is inclined to nodding whereas it is erect for 'Radiant'. The spike of 'AAC Elevate' is longer than that of 'AC Bellatrix'.
Description:
PLANT: hard red winter type, semi-erect to intermediate growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, very low frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, matures mid-season
SEEDLING (4-leaf stage): absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of the lower leaves
FLAG LEAF: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the auricles, strong to very strong glaucosity of the sheath, strong glaucosity of blade, glabrous blade and sheath
SPIKE: medium to strong glaucosity, tapering shape, medium density, white to yellow at maturity, nodding attitude
CULM: glabrous uppermost node, medium to strong glaucosity, straight neck
STRAW: absent or very thin pith in cross-section, weak anthocyanin colouration at maturity, yellow
AWNS: equal length to length of spike, white to light yellow at maturity
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow to medium width, slightly sloping shape
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, medium width, glabrous
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium to long, strongly curved shape
KERNEL: medium red, medium to large, medium to strong hardness
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good to very good resistance to lodging, good to very good winter hardiness
BREAD MAKING QUALITY: fair
DISEASE REACTIONS: moderately resistant to Common bunt (Tilletia caries, Tilletia foetida) and Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), moderately resistant to moderately susceptible to Fusarium head blight (Fusarium species) and Leaf rust (Puccinia recondita) and moderately susceptible to susceptible to Stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis)
INSECT REACTIONS: resistant to Wheat curl mite (Aceria tulipae)
Origin & Breeding History: 'AAC Elevate' (experimental designation 'W495' and 'LJ083') arose from the cross 'Radiant' // 'AC Bellatrix' / N95L1226 made in 2003 at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, Lethbridge, Alberta. In 2004, 12 F1 plants displaying stem and leaf rust resistance were used to produce 84 doubled haploid lines via wheat x maize pollen hybridization techniques. In 2006, initial row evaluation took place under irrigation in Lethbridge for winter survival, vigour, plant type, plant height and straw strength. From 2007 to 2010, artificially inoculated nurseries were used to assess resistance to stem rust, leaf rust and common bunt. Based on acceptable disease resistance in 2007, a line designated 'LJ083' was evaluated in an irrigated, single replicate preliminary trial in Lethbridge in 2008. Favourable productivity traits, disease resistance, and end-use quality prompted continued replicated assessment across several western Canadian environments in 2009 and 2010. 'LJ083' entered the Western Winter Wheat Cooperative Registration trial as 'W495' and was evaluated for three years from 2010/11 to 2012/13.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Agriculture & Agri-Food Research and Development Centre, Lethbridge, Alberta during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons. Each replicate consisted of 4 rows with a row length of 3.5 meters and a row spacing of 23 cm and a planting density of approximately 350 plants per square metre. There were 4 replicates arranged in a RCB design. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 60 measurements per variety per year. Height measurements were provided from the 2012 and 2013 Western Canada Winter Wheat Cooperative Registration trials. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
