Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'McKenzie'

Summary: The intensity of the anthocyanin colouration of the coleoptile is absent to weak for 'BW496' whereas it is strong for 'McKenzie'. The flag leaf of 'BW496' is longer than the flag leaf of 'McKenzie'. 'BW496' has a narrow lower glume whereas 'McKenzie' has a broad lower glume. The lower glume beak of 'BW496' is long and slightly to moderately curved whereas the beak of 'McKenzie' is short and straight. 'BW496' has a heavier kernel weight than 'McKenzie'.

Description:

PLANT: common hard red spring type, semi-erect growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, matures mid-season

SEEDLING (4 leaf stage): absent to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous sheath and blade of lower leaves

FLAG LEAF: medium to high frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves, very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, strong glaucosity of sheath, glabrous blade and sheath

CULM NECK: weak to medium glaucosity, straight
STRAW (AT MATURITY): medium thickness of pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration

SPIKE: very weak to weak glaucosity at heading, tapering to parallel sided in profile, lax to medium density, incline attitude, golden white at maturity, very sparse hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: golden white, awns from tip of spike shorter than spike length
LOWER GLUME: medium to long, narrow to medium width, glabrous, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, slightly elevated
LOWER GLUME BEAK: long, slightly to moderately curved
LOWEST LEMMA: slightly curved beak

KERNEL: medium to dark red, medium size, medium to long, narrow to medium width, elliptical shape, rounded cheek shape, medium length of brush hairs, medium width and depth of crease
GERM: small to medium size, rounded

DISEASE REACTION: resistant to Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina); moderately resistant to Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. Tritici) and Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. Tritici); intermediate resistance to Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum); susceptible to Bunt (Tilletia tritici)

Origin & Breeding History: 'BW496' (experimental designation '05S2145-30') originated from the cross 'PT611'/'01S2084-28'. The original cross was made in Berthoud, Colorado in 2005. Individual head selections were made from an F2 population screened at the Syngenta Canada, Inc. breeding nursery in Rosebank Manitoba in 2006. Single seed descent technique was used to advance selections through the F3 and F4 generations in the greenhouse. In the summer of 2007, F5 head rows were individually bulked from a selection nursery in Rosebank Manitoba. The individual bulks in the F6 generation were screened in 2008 for disease resistance and agronomic characteristics. In 2009, preliminary yield trials were conducted in a two location observation nursery. One of the bulk selections was designated as '05S2145-30' and tested in multi-location research trials in 2011. Final tests were done as 'BW496' in the Central Bread Wheat Committee registration trials during 2012-2014 seasons.

Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials for 'SY Slate' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons near Rosebank, Manitoba. Plots consisted of three replications arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Plots were 3.72 metres squared with a planting density of 2400 plants per plot. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per plant or parts of plants, resulting in a total of 40 measurements over 2 years. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
