Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Verona', 'Strongfield' and 'AC Avonlea'
Summary: The glaucosity of the flag leaf sheath of 'CDC Precision' is weak whereas it is medium for 'AAC Marchwell' and 'Strongfield'. The flag leaf of 'CDC Precision' is shorter than that of 'CDC Verona' and narrower than that of 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'. The spike of 'CDC Precision' is shorter than that of 'CDC Verona' and 'AC Avonlea'. The shape of the shoulder of the lower glume of 'CDC Precision' is elevated to strongly elevated with the second point present whereas it is sloping for 'Strongfield'.
Description:
PLANT: spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, heads emerge early to mid-season
SEEDLING: absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades
FLAG LEAF: very low frequency of plants with recurved/drooping flag leaves, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, weak glaucosity of sheath, glaucosity absent on lower side of leaf blade, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: medium glaucosity, medium degree of curvature
STRAW: thin pith in cross-section, absent or very weak anthocyanin colouration at maturity, yellow
SPIKE: absent or very weak glaucosity, parallel sided shape in profile, medium to dense, white at maturity, weakly inclined attitude, medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: longer than length of spike, white, weak to medium degree of spreading
LOWER GLUME: medium width, medium to long, sparse pubescence, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, elevated to strongly elevated with second point present
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, slightly to moderately curved
LOWEST LEMMA: straight to slightly curved beak shape
KERNEL: amber, medium to large, medium to long, medium width, elliptical shape, angular cheek, very short brush hairs, mid-wide to wide crease, mid-deep to deep crease
GERM: medium size, broad elliptical shape
AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS: good resistance to shattering, low pre-harvest sprouting tendency, good pasta quality
DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Common Bunt (Tilletia tritici and Tilletia laevis), Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina), Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici), and Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis); moderately resistant to Loose Smut (Ustilago tritici); moderately susceptible to Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Precision' (experimental designations 'DT577' and 'D04.66.020') is the result of the cross 'CDC Verona' / DT724 // DT765 made in the summer of 2004 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan. The F1 was increased at a contra-season in New Zealand and the F2 was planted in Saskatoon. In 2005, over 400 single F2 spikes were selected and bulk threshed to produce the F3 generation which was increased in bulk at a contra-season nursery in New Zealand. In 2006, the F4 generation was grown in a space-planted nursery where over 400 single spikes were selected. In 2007, F4:5 rows were planted in Saskatchewan and one line, 'D04.66.020' was selected for plant height, maturity and straw strength and was grown in un-replicated F6 yield trials in 2008 in Saskatoon. In 2009, the F7 was evaluated for agronomic traits in replicated yield trials at various locations in Saskatchewan and in disease resistance trials in Saskatoon and Carman, Manitoba. In 2010 and 2011, 'D04.66.020' was further evaluated in various locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta in the Durum Wheat A and B tests. In 2012, it was evaluated as 'DT577' in the Durum Wheat co-operative tests from 2012 to 2014. Selection criteria were yield potential, plant maturity, plant height, disease resistance, grain quality and end use functionality.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials of 'CDC Precision' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the Crop Science Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, RCB design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows. The plot size was 4 square metres with a density of 300 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's T-test.
