Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'
Summary: The flag leaf of 'CDC Dynamic' is narrower than that of 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'. The frequency of plants with recurved flag leaves is low for 'CDC Dynamic' whereas it is absent or very low for 'AAC Marchwell' and 'Strongfield'. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the flag leaf auricles of 'CDC Dynamic' is very weak whereas it is weak to medium for 'CDC Verona'. At maturity, the curvature of the culm of 'CDC Dynamic' is very weak whereas it is weak to medium for 'AAC Marchwell' and 'CDC Verona'. In cross section, the straw pith is of medium thickness for 'CDC Dynamic' whereas it is thin for 'AAC Marchwell', 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'. At maturity, the spike attitude of 'CDC Dynamic' is inclined whereas it is erect for 'AAC Marchwell' and 'CDC Verona'. The spike of 'CDC Dynamic' is shorter than that of 'CDC Verona'. The shape of the beak of the lower glume of 'CDC Dynamic' is very slightly curved whereas it is slightly curved to moderately curved for 'CDC Verona' and 'Strongfield'.
Description:
PLANT: spring type, erect growth habit at the 5 to 9 tiller stage, heads emerge early to mid-season
SEEDLING: weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of coleoptile, glabrous lower leaf sheaths and blades
FLAG LEAF: low frequency of plants with recurved/drooping flag leaves, very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of auricles, medium to strong glaucosity of sheath, glaucosity absent on lower side of leaf blade, glabrous blade and sheath
CULM NECK: weak to medium glaucosity, very weak degree of curvature
STRAW: medium thickness of pith in cross-section, no anthocyanin colouration at maturity, yellow
SPIKE: weak glaucosity, parallel sided shape in profile, dense, white at maturity, inclined attitude, medium hairiness of convex surface of apical rachis segment
AWNS: longer than length of spike, white, weak spreading
LOWER GLUME: long, narrow to medium width, very sparse pubescence, sparse extent of internal hairs
LOWER GLUME SHOULDER: narrow, sloping to slightly sloping
LOWER GLUME BEAK: medium length, very slightly curved
LOWEST LEMMA: very slightly curved beak shape
KERNEL: amber, large, medium length and width, elliptical shape, rounded to slightly angular cheek, short brush hairs, mid-wide to wide crease, mid-deep to deep crease
GERM: medium to large, broad elliptical shape
DISEASE REACTIONS: resistant to Common Bunt (Tilletia tritici and Tilletia laevis), Leaf Rust (Puccinia triticina) and Stripe Rust (Puccinia striiformis); resistant to moderately resistant to Loose Smut (Ustilago tritici) and Stem Rust (Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici); susceptible to Fusarium Head Blight (Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium species)
Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Dynamic' (experimental designations 'DT578' and 'D05.09.053') is the result of the cross 'CDC Verona' / 'DT472' // 'Strongfield' made in the summer of 2005 at the Crop Development Centre of the University of Saskatchewan. The F1 was increased at a contra-season in New Zealand and the F2 was planted in Saskatoon. In 2006, over 400 single F2 spikes were selected and bulk threshed to produce the F3, which was increased in bulk at a contra-season nursery in New Zealand. In 2007, the F4 was grown in a space planted nursery and just over 400 single spikes were selected. In 2008, F4:5 rows were planted in Saskatchewan and one line, 'D05.09.053' was selected for plant height, maturity and straw strength and was grown in un-replicated F6 yield trials in 2009 in Saskatoon. In 2010, 'D05.09.053' was evaluated for agronomic traits in replicated yield trials at various locations in Saskatchewan and in disease resistance trials in Saskatoon and Carman, Manitoba. In 2011, 'D05.09.053' was further evaluated in various locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta in the Durum Wheat A-test. It was evaluated as 'DT578' in the Durum Wheat co-operative tests from 2012 to 2014. Selection criteria were yield potential, plant maturity, plant height, disease resistance, grain quality and end use functionality.
Tests & Trials: The comparative tests and trials of 'CDC Dynamic' were conducted during the 2014 and 2015 growing seasons at the Crop Science Research Farm, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A two replicate, RCB design was planted with each replicate consisting of 5 rows. The plot size was 4 square metres with a density of 300 plants per square metre. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's T-test.
